I recently had the pleasure of shooting the Magnum Research Baby Desert Eagle BB pistol. Having seen it profiled as one of several affordable, high quality air pistols, and also on several message boards and blogs discussing the gun’s characteristics, I wanted to give the pistol a try for myself to see how much truth there was to the hype behind the pistol.
The first claim that the Magnum Research Baby Desert Eagle BB CO2 powered BB pistol is affordable is most definitely true. The pistol is found most places for right around the $40 price point.. For this low cost, the pistol has the ability to house 15 steel BBs in its built-in magazine. The grip plate on the side of the handle slides back to reveal the 12g CO2 compartment, which gives easy access for reloading the CO2. The pistol tops out at a velocity of 420 fps, which is plenty fast.
One of the first things that you notice when unpacking the Magnum Research Baby Desert Eagle is the additional Picatinny rail that attaches to the top of the pistol. This railing allows for the addition of the optical accessories of your choosing, or other accessories. Adding optics to the top or bottom of the pistol allows for the quick and accurate acquisition of a target, whether it be an optical sight, a laser, a flashlight, or a laser/flashlight combination.
My personal experience with the gun left nothing to be desired. I shot the gun with both my father and a close friend at different times, and they both enjoyed shooting it as well. We set up several soft drink cans as our initial targets, and after a few shots to “sight in”, we were consistently shooting the cans we wanted from approximately 10 to 15 yards away. We then set up some various targets, such as tin cans, cardboard boxes, and plastic jugs on the top of a fence line, and were able to accurately shoot them up to around 15 or 20 yards. My friend has the chance to shoot a wide variety of different firearms on a weekly basis due to his chosen profession.
However, he does not have much experience with airguns, and so I asked him his opinion. He said that he thought the ability to very economically shoot and get the “feel” of a gun is one of the best qualities of low priced pistols. In addition, the capability of shooting in many more locations than you could safely shoot a real firearm makes the concept of owning air pistols valuable. We were able to shoot the Baby Desert Eagle as many times as any of us cared to (several magazines worth) and there was still CO2 left in the capsule, ready for more action.
The Baby Desert Eagle is surprisingly realistic for a gun in its price range. The feeling of the grip in your hands feels very similar to that of a firearm. The feeling of the trigger pull is noticeably different than that of a firearm, but it does not significantly detract from the enjoyment of firing the pistol.
In my opinion, the best feature of such a low priced quality BB pistol is its rugged feel and construction. Even after lots of firing and being banged and jostled around, the gun remains in great working order. It compares very favorable to other similarly priced guns on the market, and stands up very well to high amounts of fire and the abuse that can be inflicted on the pistol over time.
If you are considering the Baby Desert Eagle, then I would also recommend considering the complete Baby Desert Eagle kit (pull down menu on right), which comes with the pistol, two 12 g CO2 Capsules, five targets to shoot at, one pair of shooting glasses, and one package of 250 high quality steel BBs. The entire kit only costs a few more dollars than the gun by itself, and gives you everything that you need to begin shooting.
Whether it be the pistol by itself or the kit with all the accessories, this is a high quality and affordable BB air pistol that is terrific fun to shoot. If you are looking for an inexpensive way to plink around your house (of course check your local ordinances to make sure you don't break any laws), or a great gift idea that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, I would highly recommend the Magnum Research Baby Desert Eagle.
