As many people now spend most of their time in front of the television or staring at a computer screen, eye strain has become a very common problem. Eye strain occurs when a person overworks their eye muscles, causing fatigue and strain. Luckily, there are helpful exercises one can do in order to avoid eye strain and fatigue.

How Do I Know If I Have Eye Strain or Fatigue?


There are many symptoms that distinguish eye strain or fatigue; most commonly, eye irritation, dryness or discomfort. However, there are many other symptoms such as headaches, neck aches or even back aches. Other tell-tale signs of eye strain or fatigue are eye twitches, dizziness, and blurred or double vision.


Helpful Exercises to Avoid Eye Strain and Fatigue


1) To avoid eye strain and fatigue, it's crucial one takes breaks throughout the day. Your eyes are telling you they need rest! Equally as important, your eyes need to shift focus. Many people will go for a walk or switch to a task that doesn't involve staring at a computer, television screen or paperwork to give their eyes a rest.


2) Especially with older computers and televisions, for instance, glare can be a real problem for your eyes. There are solutions to avoiding glare. First, one should be sure they do not have their computer or television angled towards a direct light source. If possible, it's a good idea to purchase a newer computer monitor and television, most of which use technology to avoid glare. Lastly, anti-glare filters are available that can be attached to your computer's monitor. These anti-glare filters are also called monitor filters or anti-glare screen solutions and were created specifically to help one avoid eye strain and fatigue. Anti-glare glasses are also an option.


3) When is the last time you checked the contrast on your computer monitor or television screen? Balancing contrast prevents your eyes from over-focusing. Also, be sure that lighting at home and work is set at a moderate level. When outdoors, use sunglasses with polarized lenses. The lenses of polarized sunglasses reduce glare reflected at some angles from shiny non-metallic surfaces such as water.


4) While you are adjusting the contrast on your computer monitor and television, check the color settings to make sure you are using the full-color option. Again, with the lighting at home or work, try and use full spectrum florescent bulbs, which filter imbalanced light to increase contrast, show true color and reduce glare. An added bonus to using full spectrum florescent bulbs is that they use far less energy than incandescent or other florescent light bulbs. Studies show that these light bulbs provide the full spectrum of the rays you'd receive from the sun. Most people do not get adequate sunlight, especially those confined to an office setting and people should get at least one hour of unfiltered sunlight per day.


5) When your eyes are strained, that means the muscles controlling your eyes are strained. To strengthen your eye muscles, practice eye exercises, which are proven to help you avoid eye strain and fatigue.


Easy Exercises for Your Eyes


For at least a half an hour a day, try one or more of the following exercises to help avoid eye strain and fatigue:


1) Sit up comfortably and rest your elbows on a surface. Bring your palms to your eyes and cover them until you see nothing but darkness. Be sure not to apply pressure. Breathe slowly and calmly for 10 minute segments three times a day.


2) While standing, focus on a distant object and blink rapidly to lubricate the eyes. This exercise can also be accomplished in 10 minute segments three times a day.


3) Try and focus on several differently colored objects throughout the day.


4) Hold a small object in your hand and slowly move it away from your face, ensuring that your eye follows the object and retains focus upon it. Again, you can do this in 10 minute segments three times a day.


5) Stand and relax while covering one eye with your hand. Hold your other hand in front of your nose with your thumb point upwards. Then, stare at your thumbnail and move your arm upward, then downward, level with the nose. Then move it to the starting point again. Move your thumb in an outline of a quarter-circle.


Although eye strain and fatigue causes discomfort, generally it is not a serious condition. Of course, in some cases, eye strain and fatigue can indicate an underlying eye condition in which case, should eye exercises not feel effective, you should see your doctor. Because it's difficult to reduce all the factors that cause eye strain and fatigue, performing simple eye exercises can go a long way alleviate symptoms.
