Advice on getting the right insurance for driving abroad.
If one plans of driving while visiting overseas, they may need to procure additional auto insurance. The laws regarding what is required vary by country and it is best to check ahead of time to familiarize oneself with the laws and make the necessary arrangements before departure. Some countries require foreign visitors to have a “green card” which is proof of their having adequate insurance coverage.

It is important to determine what type of insurance will be best to have. Most visitors to foreign countries suffering injury or death do so as the result of vehicular accidents. Basic auto insurance will cover liability or collision. Comprehensive insurance will cover collision, liability for bodily injury or property damage, medical, accidental death and dismemberment, rental reimbursement, and fees for towing the rental vehicle. Comprehensive insurance will also cover fire, theft, vandalism, disasters, and “acts of God.”

It is wise if one first determines if their domestic auto insurance policy covers them while driving overseas and to know exactly what that coverage entails. If one’s policy does not cover them while driving overseas, determine if such coverage is available. Some companies offer overseas coverage and some do not. If ones insurance company does not provide overseas protection, ask for referrals to companies that do. Rates for overseas insurance coverage will be more costly than for domestic coverage, so it pays to shop around. Once adequate insurance coverage is verified one should obtain a “green card” from the insurance agent.

If one is to rent a vehicle from a reputable overseas dealer it is possible that the rental agreement will include some form of insurance coverage. Overseas rental companies may have different eligibility requirements for renting vehicles and for purchasing additional insurance. One should determine those things well ahead of one’s travel date. If one meets the eligibility requirements for renting a vehicle and if the coverage offered does not seem adequate, ask if it is possible to purchase additional coverage. This additional coverage will add on average about $30.00 per day to the rental charges.

One should study all of the options and determine what will best meet the requirements in the county one is visiting, what options best meet one’s personal needs and what one is able to afford. One should remember that driving in a foreign country is likely to be more hazardous than driving in the United States. Advance planning, understanding the regulations and having adequate insurance coverage will lend itself to one’s peace of mind and a happier journey.
