Not every auto insurance policy comes with windscreen cover as standard. If you've got fully comprehensive car insurance, you will be covered, but most third party polices require windscreen cover to be bought separately if required.
Keep reading below to find out more about car insurance windscreen cover.
" Looking after your windscreen
It's easy for your windscreen to get chipped when you're out and about or when your car is parked somewhere. Many people with fully comprehensive car insurance don't realise they may be able to get any chips in their windscreen replaced for free as part of their policy.
Of you do have to pay, the cost of repairing a chipped or cracked windscreen is usually below the excess amount on an auto insurance policy.
Car insurance companies would rather you got a little chip repaired before it got any worse and it's therefore important to regularly check your windscreen for any signs of damage.
" Where to take your car for a replacement windscreen
Most of the bigger auto insurance companies will have a preferred windscreen repair/replacement partner. If you do need any work done on your windscreen it's best to call your car insurance company first as they will be able to tell you where to take it.
If you choose to go ahead and get your windscreen replaced at a local garage without informing your insurer, and later try to claim for it, some car insurance companies won't accept your claim.
Under no circumstances should you ever try to repair your car windscreen yourself, as the results can be very dangerous.
" The dangers of driving with a chipped windscreen
It's usually very quick and easy to take your car in to get a replacement windscreen or a chip repaired. Some car windscreen companies will even come to you for added convenience.
Driving around even with a small chip in your windscreen may not seem dangerous in itself, but hitting a pothole in the road or going over a speed bump too fast can cause a small chip to crack, making driving either very difficult or impossible.
There's no way of telling where or when a large crack might develop on your windscreen, so if you see any damage at all, you should ring your auto insurance company and arrange to get it repaired as quickly as possible.
The last thing you want is to be driving along a motorway at high speeds and having your visibility affected by a cracked windscreen.
