Auction quality concerns

My perception of used car auctions has always been of low quality b-grade stock being sold by rogue traders to unsuspicious car buyers, or buyers with the means to fix and repair a banger.
My perception of used car auctions has always been of low quality b-grade stock being sold by rogue traders to unsuspicious car buyers, or buyers with the means to fix and repair a banger. This changed once I visited my first car auction with my dad. The auction halls were clean and there were immaculate looking cars going under the hammer. The people selling these cars were large companies who had not got the time to sell them individually and the people buying them were traders who had the means and time to resell them. If any needed mechanical or cosmetic attention this was quite apparent, so the buyer knew exactly what they were bidding on.

The larger auction halls are for larger traders only, where thousands of cars are sold. Over the recent months auction houses and the trade in general have been complaining about the quality of cars going under the hammer. Like I said before these auction houses usually contain a good mix of low mileage clean cars and a few high mileage cars that could do with tidying up.

Due to the current economic climate and the market 3 years ago we are seeing a lot of ex fleet cars come into the auction halls. Over the last couple of years fleets have held onto their cars for longer to save money, this has led to older cars with higher mileages being entered in the auctions. The situation is worsened by the fact that there is a shortage of quality used cars, so when a quality motor does come along it is very quickly snapped up.

Auction sales of ex-fleet between March and June of this year increased by 15% compared to the same period last year – from 87,000 to 100,000 units. So if you’re looking to buy used cars in Surrey and don’t mind a “fixer upper” then head down to your local auction house and pick up a bargain.Auction sales of ex-fleet between March and June of this year increased by 15% compared to the same period last year – from 87,000 to 100,000 units.
