ASUS N53Jn - Sounds as good as it looks [Review]

The N53Jn is part of the ASUS entertainment series focused at high-end multimedia users. Unlike its elder sibling the ASUS N53Jq, it lacks a dedicated graphics card that makes it unsuitable even for casual gaming. Let us find out how the laptop fares across synthetic and real-world benchmarks, while justifying its worth as an entertainment laptop later in the review.

Build Quality & Ergonomics

The N53Jn is well built with a metallic finish on the lid and the stylish ASUS logo engraved on the lid stands out. The harder than normal plastic elements on the innards of the lid including the bezel, give it a solid feel. The edges of the lid are well crafted with delicate curves at the hinges.

The keypad layout has been smartly revamped by shifting the trackpad slightly to the left and accommodating the dedicated numpad to the extreme right. However, we see some space wasted on either sides of the keypad as part of the design strategy, which could have been avoided. The flat-key design enables quick and accurate typing, by providing enough navigation room for maneuvering your fingers. The keys provide good tactile feedback and are easy on the fingers. However, some keys jerk sideways due to the flex in the middle of the keypad.

Features

The N53Jn ships with a set of four USB ports among which one is a composite e-SATA port. It includes an HDMI port for HDTV connectivity and an USB 3.0 port for connecting the peripheral devices. It adds the privilege of switchable graphics to toggle between the power saving mode and performance mode. The dedicated Wi-Fi on/off switch on the left and the multimedia buttons above the keypad enhance usability. Meanwhile, the numpad, capslock LEDs above the keypad add to the ergonomics and user experience.

Performance

The 15.6-inch display lacks picture clarity when viewed from the sides, owing to its limited viewing angles. The blackest blacks lack colour depth and show up a greyish shade while watching movies that are shot in low-light conditions. The metal grilled stereo speakers from Bang & Olufsen, produce excellent sound quality minus distortion even at the highest volume levels. Its low battery-life lasting under an hour, is no surprise considering its powerful configuration. Overall, the N53Jn is a good desktop substitute with good synthetic and real-world benchmark performances, that translate to almost double the performance yielded by some of the mid-range laptops like MSI FX600 and HP Pavilion G6. With such a powerful configuration to boot, the N53Jn is ideal for multitasking without slowing down the performance. The lack of a dedicated graphics card is the only chink in its configuration, that prevented us from running any games on it.

Verdict

The Asus laptops is a leading laptop from the ASUS entertainment series with its top class speaker performance with due credit to Bang & Olufsen, being the product highlight. However, its price tag of Rs. 68,999 is a bit expensive compared to a similarly configured Dell XPS laptop priced at Rs.53,000. Its top-class build quality coupled with its elegant looks makes it a desirable candidate. The addition of consistent performance across most parameters makes the N53Jn a worthy candidate. The only setback is its low battery-life which could be forgiven for such a powerful configuration. Overall, the Dell XPS series is a better choice given the powerful 2nd generation Core i5 processor on it and its budget friendly price that can save you about Rs. 15,000. Hence, we recommend you the XPS over the N53Jn, unless you can afford its steep price in bargain for its superior build quality and excellent speaker performance.
