Assam is one of the richest biodiversity zones in the world and consists of tropical rainforests, deciduous forests, riverine grasslands,bamboo orchards and numerous wetland ecosystems; Many are now protected as national parks and reserved forests. Assam and adjoining regions have evidences of human settlements from all the periods of the Stone ages. The hills at the height of 1500–2000 feet (460 to 615 m) were popular habitats probably due to availability of exposed doleritic basalt useful for tool-making. Assam lies just south of the eastern Himalayas, with the important Brahmaputra River cutting across it. In the northern hilly areas, the population is mainly tribal while the plains contain predominantly non-tribal Hindus. Agriculturally very fertile, with heavy rains between June to September, it is full of rice paddy fields, produces about 15 percent of the world's total output of tea
and also produces more than half of India's petroleum.The Assamese are a mixture of Mongolian-Tibetan, Aryan, and Burman ethnic origins. Their language is akin to Bengali, spoken in West Bengal and in Bangladesh. Since the late 19th century a vast number of immigrants from Bangladesh have entered the valley, where they have settled to cultivate the almost empty lands, particularly the low floodplains. The hilly margins of the plain are inhabited by the hill tribes of the Garo, Khasi, and Hajong. The Bodo are the largest minority group in Assam and are concentrated in the northern areas of the Brahmaputra River valley. Assam observes Bhogali Bihu , Rongali Bihu, Kati Bihu, Janmashthami and Durga Puja festivals. Rangali Bihu, the main Bihu festival, is in April. Exotic denizens of the sylvan world add to the mystery and charm of this weird land. Frolick of apes, graceful elephants, fluttering of wings & singing of birds, migratory birds flying into the hills, the majestic tiger enforcing his authority all invite you to carry back home a little what the heaven is made of.

Kamakhya Temple: Also called yoni Pith is 8 km away from the railway station of Guwahati, situated at Neelachal Hill, is the most revered shrine of Hindu Religion. Legend has it that the body of Sati was dismembered and it is believed that of the pieces of her body which were scattered across the land and her yoni fell on Neelachal hill. During the Ambubachi Puja, the temple throngs with devotees.

Manas National Park: Situated at the foot hills of eastern Himalayas, Nameri National Park covers an area of about 200 sq. km. Hills, deciduous forests and the river Jia Bhoroli have all added a unique charm to it.

Urra Tara Temple: The half-hidden Urra Tara Temple is Guwahati's second-holiest, backed by the gently attractive Jorpulkuri ponds in the city centre's most prestigious residential quarter.

Darranga: 100 km away and close to verdant Bhutan border is a delightful location of the famous Bhutia fair in winter. The drive takes you along vast tracts of tea gardens.

Sukreswar Ghat Park: Sukreswar Devalaya comprises three mostly modern-looking temples including one where holy water dribbles continuously over a Shiva lingam from a suspended bell-metal amphora.

How to reach:

Air: There are good air-connectivity to Assam from the major cities in India. Guwahati's Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is the businest in Assam and other major airports are in Dibrugarh, and Silchar.

Rail: Guwahati is connected by rail with New Delhi, Calcutta, Bombay, Madras, Trivandrum, Bangalore, Cochin, Silchar, Tinsukia and Dibrugarh.

Bus: Buses are the most common medium of travel in Assam. Buses in Assam are generally well maintained and comfortable. There are regular bus services connecting important places within Assam and to neighbouring states.
