1. Color
Color is the ingredient of paint responsible for covering and hiding of the surface providing visually soothing experience, means good to look at. All paint colors are created from the same base pigments including sienna, umber, titanium oxide, and zinc oxide. Particles of these pigments are mixed into the paint to get various coloring effects. These paint pigment are free suspended solid particles mixed within the paint, if you let the paint sit for awhile the particles will also settle down at the bottom and will need to be shaken.
2. Spreading Colors
The ability of any paint to spread uniformly in a distributed fashion directly depends on the type of solvent used in it. In earlier times wax, water, and lime were used as primary solvents in paints. In the recent times, water is the carrier for water-base paint, while petroleum serves as solvent for oil-base paints and so on…
3. Adhesive
Without an excellent quality adhesive any paint cannot stick to the intended surface and would come down with time. Binder is one constituent of every paint that helps paint in sticking by joining the pigment particles to other solvents and materials used. Also, when it dries, it acts as a protective finish. Paint gets its name from the binder that it uses, so latex is used for water-base paints and alkyd is used for oil-base paints. The binder in oil-base paints is either natural oil or alkyd and in water-based paints the binder is usually a plastic, either acrylic, vinyl or a combination of both.
4. Oil or Water base Paints
Both of these paint types have their advantages and drawbacks, like oil-based paints take longer to dry than water-base which is good as longer the drying time, better the paint will flatten out hiding brush marks. Water based paints, on the other hand dry fast and has the advantage of quick recoating in a timely fashion. Oil-base paints have a very distinct odor that may not suit your nose at all, at the same time durability & longevity is assured with oil-base. Also, oil-base is difficult to clean and often requires mineral spirits or turpentine.
Water-base, as mentioned earlier, dries rapidly, has a very faint odor once the paint has dried, and it can be cleaned by simply using soap and water.
5. Gloss
The gloss or as widely called the finish of the paint has a great impact on the overall look of your room. To simply put the ideology behind it, the more binder used in a paint, the shinier the finish will be. Finish choices range from flat i.e. dull to high-gloss also called brilliant shine.
6. Primer
Considered as a very essential element for any paint job, primer is basically responsible for precautionary measures such as sealing well-prepared surface, leaving a solid base ready for paint. Using a primer can not only make your finish coat look better but will also help it last longer by correcting existing surface problems and preventing premature paint failure. It is recommended to always use a primer before any paint job, even if the surface is in very good condition. Primers can be tinted and used to cover a darker shade and they can also be used to hide surface pores.
If you use the right primer it will increase the quality and durability of your paint job. Your house paint can last up to 10 years or more with the right choice and use of a superior quality primer.
