Heat Pumps becoming More Popular for Heating and Air Conditioning

Arizona and Southern California are excellent areas for Heat Pumps

Areas like Arizona and Southern California are really starting to warm up to heat pumps. Heat pumps have been available for years, but recent rises in energy costs mixed with economic concerns have lead people to replace their aging air conditioners with heat pumps to save on costs. The reason why heat pumps are gaining popularity in southwest states like Arizona and California is because their limitations are nullified by the warm winters. Heat pumps have difficulty operating in temperatures below freezing, but in AZ and CA this isn’t an issue.

Heat pumps work in a very similar fashion to air conditioning units, but they offer the ability to work “in reverse”. This means that it can go from producing cool air inside and warm air outside (like an air conditioning unit does), to producing cool air outside and warm air inside (to heat a building). Since heat pumps can “work both ways” they can both cool and heat a house. The ability to work year round is great for places like San Diego, where it never gets too hot, or too cold throughout the year.

Heat pumps can be installed above ground or below ground. Each offers their own pros and cons. Above ground models are cheaper to install, but are less efficient. Below ground models, on the other hand, are more difficult to install, but are more efficient.

As Heat Pump Usage Increases, so does the Need for Qualified HVAC Technicians

As heat pumps are replacing air conditioning, their industry is growing. With this growth there is an increasing demand for HVAC school graduates capable of installing and servicing them. Some employers even report hiring people without previous HVAC experience and training them themselves because they're having trouble finding enough HVAC technicians. These employers would much rather hire an air conditioning program graduate, though. By getting a degree from the Refrigeration School, Inc. you can get the hands-on experience you need to get noticed by these employers.

RSI’s air conditioning program focuses on building real world skills through hands-on teaching. This means that graduates from RSI’s air conditioning program are ready to diagnose and solve problems which typically occur on the job. If you are interested in entering into the in-demand field of HVAC electrical / mechanical maintenance and repair, contact RSI today for more information.
