Argumentative research paper deals with the subject by analyzing it with arguments in favor of and also against the motion. A final conclusion can be reached after considering all the arguments.
An argumentative research paper gives a lot of emphasis in the analysis of the issue. A good research methodology and selecting a proper analytical tool is essential for writing an argumentative research paper. The sampling techniques and the data collection from the field should be done with appropriate care otherwise the entire process of analyzing will go in vain. A good analytical tool should have the following property:
1) Reliability- reliability is the most important characteristic of a quality analytical tool. It means that under similar condition the tool should provide similar results. If an analytical tool gives different results under similar conditions it can’t be considered reliable. For example, if family disorganization is taken as the index of sex crime, the scale is not reliable since in some circumstances family disorganization is not the cause of sex crime.
2) Validity- validity means that the tool provides correct measurement of data. If a tool successfully measures data, it is considered valid. Since the natures of different kind of research phenomena are considerably complex and indefinite, it is not easy to arrive at a scientific criterion for fixing validity of a scale. Therefore, it is generally done on the basis of general knowledge and insight. If our reasoning and general knowledge is satisfied by the result of a scale, it is generally accepted as having validity. On the contrary, if its results contradict our general knowledge and reasoning, it is declared as invalid.
3) Simplicity- Simplicity is a characteristic of an analytical tool having several advantages. First of all, if a scale is simple its use will be considerably wide spread. Again, wide spread use will gradually lead to its improvement, increasing its validity. Secondly, a simple analytical tool attains confidence of more people.
4) Workability- An analytical tool must be workable. Then alone it will be pragmatic and practicable. This trait means that the bases which are at the root of the scale are easily available in the actual field of work. Thus abstract and imaginary bases should not be included in the formation of scale, since it makes it impractical.
5) Extension- Extension or comprehension is also a characteristic of a superior analytical tool. The scales of measurement in physical sciences are almost universal. For example, the length of a meter is the same in every part of the world. The nature of social phenomena, however, is different from that of physical phenomena. Therefore, similar amount of extension of universality can’t be expected to be achieved in the scales used in social sciences. For example, marital disorganization in an orthodox country may be considered as due to extra marital relationships. This scale, however, will not work in semi permissive and permissive societies. In such a situation it may be said that the researcher should try to make his scale as much universal as possible.
After doing the proper analysis of the subject a conclusion is reached and the whole process is written in black and white in the research paper.
