We all know that the generic plastic water containers are not safe to be able to reuse over a long period of time. This is because several chemicals used in the manufacture of certain plastics are of concern. The substance bisphenol-A (BPA) found in most plastic water bottles are the known cause for hormonal imbalance. Scientists have found through researches that BPA has been linked to cancers in lab animals, and there are indubitably, concerns that it could also cause cancers in the human population. As a general rule, before buying a drinking plastic container, hard plastics with the number 2, 4, or 5 on it are believed to be safe, while plastics labeled 1, 3, and 7 are believed to be potentially hazardous, especially if they are reused. However, people are still doubtful of using plastic bottles and prefer to use either aluminium mugs or stainless steel travel mugs.
The only water containers that are 100% safe to use are made of glass. Unfortunately for us, it would definitely be impractical to use glass travel mugs due to it being fragile and heavy. Definitely, it is not the desired alternative for the general consumer. Fortunately, other types of water container are available. One common alternative is containers that are made out of aluminium. However, aluminium is toxic, and if mishandled, could lead to serious health problems as well such as liver problems.
If everything sounds bleak to us, what other options are left for us? This leaves us with the option of stainless steel containers for our drinks. Stainless steel is defined as a steel alloy with a minimum of 11.5% chromium content. The name comes from the fact that stainless steel does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as ordinary steel. Most stainless steel travel mugs are made out of a composite containing chromium and nickel.
Stainless steels are much more likely to be a better alternative to plastic, glass or aluminum bottles. Stainless steel travel mugs are 100% recyclable, durable, do not alter the taste of ones contents and almost as lightweight as plastic. More importantly, stainless steel travel mugs are also free from chemicals like BPA, and are safe to use with hot liquids. Another benefit of using stainless steel travel mugs is that maintaining it is easy. It is cleaned easily with baking soda or vinegar. All you have to do to break in the bottle is to soak it in water and vinegar and water overnight to get rid of the metallic taste and voila! You are set to go and enjoy your steaming coffee on the go!
As a conclusion, until further scientific tests can be carried out to determine if plastic bottles are absolutely safe to be used in the long run, it is better to be cautionary and use other alternative. Clearly, stainless steel travel mug in order to avoid exposure to BPA or other chemicals that may pose a risk to one’s health.
