A membrane keypad can be defined as a computer keypad whose keys are not separate moving parts as commonly found in most types of computers but rather as pressure pads which have outlines and symbols printed on flat flexible surfaces. In most cases there is very little or no tactile feedback felt on this type of keypads. The keypad membrane works when an electrical contact is made between the keypad surface and underlying circuits when the key's top surfaces are pressed. These types of keypads have been in use since the 1980s on home computers and have since found wide applications in consumer electronic devices.

Apart from their accuracy, ease of use and general efficiency, another contributing factor which has made membrane keypads so popular is the fact that they are inexpensive and more resistant to dirt and liquids as compared to ordinary keypads. However, due to the lack of tactile feedback many people initially have difficulty in using them but once they get used to them they tend to prefer them over ordinary keypads. Some keypad membrane manufacturers, upon request from the user, can add the tactile feedback to the keypad. The tactile feedback in this case can either be provided via metal domes or embossed polyester domes.

Membrane keypads have found wide applications in different sectors ranging from industry to domestic appliances. In industry they are mostly found on automated machines and here they enable the input of instructions as well as effective control of the machines. For domestic applications these keypads are commonly found on remote controls, calculating devices, laptop computers, and microwave ovens, among others. The sleeker more uniform design of these keypads is appealing to many consumers nowadays due to the aesthetic appeal, ease of use, and resistance to water and dirt. For these reasons most manufacturers are looking into more ways of improving their products including the addition of membrane keypads.

Membrane keypads are presently used to run different types of electrical devices and technology is now pointing to more ways in which the keypad membrane can be applied. This has lead to the demand for customized or consumer designed keypads which have in turn resulted in an increase in the number of manufacturers offering these products for the domestic market. In such cases the manufacturer works hand in hand with the user to achieve the type of keypad membrane that will suit the specified needs. Generally these types of keypads are affordable and they offer great value for money since they last long.
