The sources from Silicon Valley said that they almost affirm that Apple is developing a digital TV with iOS operating system.
If Apple introduce iOS TV, it means that Apple will expand itsbusiness from the computer industry to the larger consumer electronics industry. Currently there are many reports provide the basis for this rumor:
- Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster expects Apple will launch a TV from the end of 2012 to early 2013. Munster quoted many sources in an interview, these sources are from Apple suppliers, and Apple internal. Munster expected that Apple will launch a TV, not just the set-top box, this TV will use the iOS System.
- Venture capitalists Stewart Alsop had also talked about Apple's "iTelivision". Alsop is the director of TiVo and Sonos, so he is very concerned about the hardware industry. He said that he had heared some rumors about Apple's TV projects from the multiple sources from Silicon Valley.
- "The Wall Street Journal" quoted the sources that Apple "is developing a new technique about posting the videos on the TV, and is discussing whether to launch a paid subscription television service". Sources of the "Wall Street Journal" usually come from Apple inside.
- Cult of Mac website pointed out that the opportunity for Apple to introduce television is ripe, because the prices of the highend TV have fallen below $ 1,000.
- The former Apple CEO Steve Jobs has said that integrating the company's technology to the TV is reasonable. This increased thespeculation of the outside.
Apple has already introduced the Apple TV set-top box to help users download movies, television programs and online videos via iTunes. Apple has made partnership with a number of film producers and television networks, and have built a large content library. Apple's lightweight iOS operating system is very suitable for the consumer electronic devices.
Alsop pointed out that the most important factor that impede Apple to introduce TV is the price of LCD panels. Since 2007, the LCD panel has been an important factor constraining Apple products.
In a few years ago, Apple has planned to launch the touch screen as the core of computer, but Alsop said that as the prices of the LCD panel are too high, Apple can only focus on smaller devices, like iPhone. However, because of the capacity's enhancement, LCD panel prices are steadily declining, which makes Apple's introduction of 9.7-inch iPad possible.
Alsop expects that Apple will soon introduce 15 inches or 19 inches Touch-screen TV system using the iOS. This time may be in the 2012's Christmas holiday. Such big screen enalbe the device to become the TV placed in the kitchen and the bedroom.
More importantly, the iOS system will enable Apple TV product can not only play videos, but also play games, run applications, help users view the calendar, and release Twitter news and so on. Apple TV can integrate with other devices such as iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air without joint, let Apple establish a complete product line of consumer electronics.
Alsop said:" If you look at the TVs in Best Buy stores, these products are very old, they have been exsiting for 30, 40 or 50 years." Although the display technology has developed, the screen has been changed into flat, and the resolution has increased dramatically, but the basic form of watching television has not changed. Alsop said:" The impact Apple TV on the TV industry will be equivalent to iPhone on the mobile phone industry."
