In terms of specification the HTC Evo 3D is one of the leading phones available but it is nice to see this specification backed up by an interface which is easy to use and one which also looks great. The new lock screen is a great addition and the overall user experience is simply superb.

The Evo 3D is the latest handset from smartphone specialists HTC. As its name suggests the phone is the first from the brand to incorporate 3D technology which really does bring another dimension to all kinds of material viewed on the phone. Rather than focus on the 3D elements of this model I thought it would be nice to take a look at the interface of the phone and see how this affects the overall functionality of the device.
HTC handsets never disappoint when it comes to the user interface and the Evo 3D is no exception. The model uses the famous Sense UI and sports version 3.0 of the platform. This user interface runs on top of the Android 2.3 operating system that is used by the phone and its job is to basically simplify all manner of functions for the user. Version 3.0 is not drastically different in terms of design from earlier versions but does offer some improvements as well as an impressive new lock screen facility. On many smartphones when you unlock the handset you are presented with the phones homescreen and from there you can perform any task that you wish. HTC have improved upon this by enabling you to directly access certain tasks from the locked phone. You can select four of your most regularly used features and an icon for each of these appears on the lock screen. To launch any one of these simply drag the icon into a circle located at the very bottom of the screen and you immediately launch that feature. This new method saves time and turns the lock facility from a basic function into a very useful feature.
The Sense user interface on the HTC Evo 3D is the most impressive Android experience that I have encountered. Visually the homescreens on the phone look stunning, the icons are incredibly clear and a new carousel enables you simply browse through all seven screens that are on offer. An advantage of the homescreens being in a carousel format is that the last screen now leads directly to the first one, on previous versions you would need to scroll back through all seven to return to the first screen. One of the best looking new widgets is the Photo Gallery which offers a far superior look than the static photo frame which was found on earlier versions of the interface. The interface also offers user an "App Drawer". The feature enables you to easily view all of the applications that are installed on the device and you are even given the option of filtering the results. The filter feature allows you to view your applications according to how frequently you use them or even list the ones you have installed yourself.
In terms of specification the HTC Evo 3D is one of the leading phones available but it is nice to see this specification backed up by an interface which is easy to use and one which also looks great. The new lock screen is a great addition and the overall user experience is simply superb.
