The officer did everything in her power not to shoot. A man in a Memphis, TN, apartment was shot and killed by a police officer last Wednesday. Surveillance cameras captured the entire event on tape, and it is clear that the officer did everything in her power not to shoot him. An alarm went off in the apartment, and when the officer showed up the man approached her and pointed a weapon at her. She took cover by her car, but he continued to chase her. When the second officer arrived the man charged at the first officer and she shot him once. The victim, Larry Stone, has been released from the county jail at 7 a.m. that same morning after being arrested for his first DUI. Stone lived at the Fieldhouse Apartments with his wife and had no criminal history. Police are not sure why he tried to attack the officer who arrived at his building, but footage from the surveillance cameras clearly showed that his advances were threatening. The video shows that when the second police car arrived, Stone charged at the first officer. The officer then shot Stone once.Stone lived at Fieldstone Apartments with his wife. Ledbetter said she called after the shooting and asked if the victim was her husband.The apartment complex does background checks on potential residents, and Ledbetter said Stone had no criminal history.Investigators said the alarm that brought police to the complex appears to be false.The officer who shot Stone has been relieved of duty while the case is being investigated. "It appears he had the weapon concealed as he was approaching the car under his coat," said Ledbetter. "He threw the coat on the ground and then directly approached the police car, raised the weapon directly at the officer."
