Every day, millions of computer virus are trying to hack in to your system. These malicious programs are designed to steal all the information in your computer, including your identity, surfing activities and most important, your financial accounts. As soon as you hooked your computer to the internet, the likelihood of getting infected is 99%. You need gatekeepers to drive them away from your system. And these keepers are the antiviren programmes.
Antiviren programmes are the gatekeepers of your computers software. They are your spies that eye on some of the malicious programs being sneaked in to your computer while you are unaware browsing what looks like a very friendly sites. Antiviren programmes are the active agents that warns you of an impending malicious code that has been hidden to a very friendly program. In this way, the risk of getting hacked will be minimized creating a very secure system in your computer.
A lot of antiviren programmes are available nowadays. However, most people are unaware of how they work. The task of inspecting software is not entirely a must, but, as an ordinary consumer it is also their right to know how those antiviren programmes that they subscribed work. As number of antiviren programme vendors increase, nevertheless, a lot of them are showing off their capabilities to an untrained user who does not even know how these program works.
To begin with, antiviren programmes are just like some other progams run on in many PC's. There are different ways that an antiviren programmes work. First is that it will auto-detect a malicious software that is running into your system. Then, you will be prompted if you will be removing the software or just continue with your work. After that, the antiviren software will eventually remove that malicious files.
So how does an antiviren software work and detects malicious codes? There are many approach to these and the most common is the database mode, the function detection, and the simulation detection. Through these approaches, programmers are trying to create the best capability in dealing with the virus that attacts millions of computers worldwide.
In the database mode, the antiviren software determines if a certain program is a virus through identifying a line of code in the program. The program codes have a certain identification that tags the author of the virus. Virus programs have a certain tag by an author. This is due to the fact that an author would like to get respect on his work and there is no such compensation of this hard work than putting his tag on the program he has created. In this way, makers of antiviren software with these approach lets you update virus definition every day just to create an updated list of tags.
A lot of antiviren sofware are using this kind of approach. The disadvantage of this is that it will add some additional legwork in identifying those computer virus generator. Every day, users are obliged to download updates of definition. Once an update is skipped, the potential of risk is very high as the antivirus software could not be able to detect the virus.
Another approach that antiviren software vendors use is the function approach. In this approach, antiviren software monitors every now and then the function of some programs functioning. If the software determines a certain suspicious behavior like duplicating important system files, the software will then prompt of a possible threat and deletes the program immediately.
The third approach is the simulation approach. In this approach, antiviren software will simulate a pseudo run in the system and eventually identify malicious programs. In this way, malicious programs will be detected through a definition of how a malicious program works. This can only be done if there is a full scan on the system.
These approaches are being employed by the antiviren software. Through this approach, the user will be trained to check how the software would work in the system.
