These days Americans are living healthier and longer than ever before, owing to more resources – both medical and financial – being more readily available for the average person. As an example, since 1950 in the United States, the average life span has increased by more than 10 years. And as average life span lengthens, so too does the desire to live out one’s life in comfort.
As defined by the Center for Disease Control, aging in place is “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.”
And it’s an issue that has gained more visibility in the past few years, and was specifically addressed on December 8, 2011, when the AARP and The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) jointly released the report: “Aging in Place: A State Survey of Livability Policies and Practices”. The report, which examines state policies to help older adults age in place, discusses how to develop communities that are senior-friendly. Of greatest consideration are the issues of efficiently and effectively integrating land use, housing and transportation; and improving affordable, accessible housing to prevent social isolation.
Purposeful aging in place has grown in popularity and celebrated by the National Aging in Place Week and the National Aging in Place Council that promotes the positive outcomes of older adults having a choice in their care and living arrangement. In addition to design-build and remodeling Certified Aging-In-Place Specialists (CAPS), there are many more professionals trained to fill the growing need in this service model for older adults.
Aging in place has become the preference of the majority of aging Americans. “If you’re a boomer person, with money to remodel, think about making your house more user-friendly, not just more beautiful, for when you have your knee replacement or a chronic condition,” said Nancy Thompson of AARP. “We’re talking smart, convenient. It doesn’t have to look institutional or utilitarian.”
Both functionality and mobility are often keys to deciding if you can age in place. Universal Design is a concept that addresses mobility and functionality in a home.
And it does not just involve hitting the hardware store and making a few changes here and there. The NAHB established the CAPS designation, where select builders and remodelers become certified as an Aging in Place Specialist. A CAPS Specialist is trained in Universal Design Principals, which makes a home more livable for all ages and stages of life.
A CAPS builder and home remodeling contractor can recommend a thorough process that will help make your home as comfortable and complete as possible.
