Another Great Aid to Learning: Writing Out Scripture

Often times when studying the Word of God, we quickly read over the verses. We get a general understanding of the verses and may spend a few moments thinking about them. But shouldn’t studying the Word of God be more than that?
Often times when studying the Word of God, we quickly read over the verses. We get a general understanding of the verses and may spend a few moments thinking about them. But shouldn’t studying the Word of God be more than that? Writing out Scripture can help deepen the time we spend in the Word and give us a better understanding of it.

Writing Helps Us “See” All The Words

When you write or type out a verse, you discover words which you otherwise might have missed. Therefore, I write out verses which I know are key truths for my life. I pray over them, diagram them, analyze them, and meditate on them. That is why I have written many of my books. I write so I can learn; so I can put truths I am understanding in my own words and in a framework which is meaningful for me.

The following is the law which God gave for new kings who had just been crowned and were coming to sit upon their throne for the first time:

“Now it shall come about when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests” (Deut. 17:18).

Since we are kings and priests, are we to do any less (I Pet 2:9)? Let us make the writing out of Scriptures an important part of our lives.

Writing Helps Us Remember

In addition to revealing words we may have otherwise missed, writing out verses helps us to remember those verses. Multiple scientific studies over the years have shown that writing, in addition to reading and speaking, helps aid in memorization. In Second Timothy we are told of the importance of memorizing the Scriptures:

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 2:14-17)

The more we learn and memorize the Bible the more we understand the mind of God, grow closer in our relationship with God, and become equipt for every good work.

Writing Helps Us Understand And Express

We often have ideas and concepts that are underdeveloped. We think about them and have a general understanding of what we think, but if asked about the idea or philophy, we cannot readily explain it to others. Writing the verses out in our own words helps us to understand what we are thinking and forces us to express that understanding outside of ourselves. By doing this, we are then better able to express our ideas and understandings to others.

We gain more if we write out verses than if we simply read over them. We make sure we don’t miss anything, we will better remember the verses, and then we are better able to explain them to others.
