As the consequences of global warming become more clear, and an increasing number of people realize the benefits of taking less from the earth and giving more in return, homebuilders and real estate developers are embracing the principles of sustainable living. From utilizing green building techniques to conserving water, sustainable communities across the nation are striving to consume less and reduce their ecological footprint. Here are some examples of communities that are taking big steps towards sustainability.
California Central Coast - Sustainable Home Plans from Tehama
Tehama is a prestige community located in Carmel on the Monterey Peninsula in California. Owner Clint Eastwood developed Tehama with sustainability in mind and he and his team are very serious about developing ecologically friendly practices. Tehama features a huge nursery of native plants and grasses, a solar powered clubhouse, a private water system, and much more.
It’s not news that water is scarce in California. At Clint Eastwood’s Tehama, a sustainable community in California, a private water company. The water supply features a reclamation system that includes use of reclamation of water to be used for landscape irrigation.
Other eco-friendly measures taken in Tehama include an underground parking lot beneath the Tehama Golf Course Clubhouse to preserve open space, and the use of down-lighting and other features designed to minimally impact the night sky. Ultimately, the goal is to preserve the vast expanses of unspoiled environment, and to be respectful of the natural surroundings.
In order to minimize waste, Tehama provides a waste management system at Tehama. The aim of the waste management system is to treat waste as a resource to recycle rather than treat it as pollution that needs disposal. For example, rainwater is collected and reused by some residents to water plants.
Homebuilders at Tehama encouraged to use local building materials in order to avoid the ecological impact that comes with transporting building materials from faraway places. The building materials used are sustainable in nature—they are either recycled or sustainably harvested.
Sustainable Communities in Other Parts of the US
Other notable sustainable communities in the U.S. include Serenbe, an environmentally sensitive community in Georgia. Native plants and organic landscaping techniques are used in Serenbe to eliminate the need for using pesticides and herbicides. At Serenbe, resource-efficient materials are used to build energy-efficient and low-maintenance homes. The community features a 25-acre organic farm. Of all 900 acres, 80% of the land is preserved as green space.
