The most important person at a hearing clinic is the audiologist. This is a doctor who is specially trained to treat problems with the ear canal and anything related to hearing loss or other symptoms such as tinnitus (ringing of the ears) and recurring ear pain.
A licensed audiologist must test and evaluate your hearing. There will usually be more than one at a hearing clinic. Your hearing will be tested using both pure tones (sounds at exact pitch and sound level) and actual speech in order to determine the extent and type of hearing loss you have. A complete audiology hearing test will last at least an hour and sometimes longer.
Once you’ve been diagnosed, you can discuss whether a hearing aid is right for you. Because there are several types of hearing loss, the audiologist will explain which type you have, how it works and what type of hearing aid or sound amplification device would be right for you.
Most hearing clinics offer hearing aids from several manufacturers so you can choose the right one for you. This will depend on what you’re using it for: comfort, the size of the hearing aid, the cost and when you will be using it. If you primarily need it for watching television and chatting with friends, the hearing clinic may suggest a different model than they would recommend for someone who spends a lot of time in crowded rooms.
Hearing clinics also offer Assistive Listening Devices (ALD’s) for those who can’t or won’t use a hearing aid. These include FM transmitters and amplified phones to amplify sound in specific situations.
Hearing clinics also offer preventative and health care for the ears. If your hearing is affected by wax build-up, they can clean your ears gently and effectively without damaging the ear drum. They will also educate you on proper ear care in order to protect the hearing you still have. You can purchase all kinds of protective devices for the ears at a hearing clinic. Ear plugs that mute loud noises and protect the ear drums from high decibel sound damage are one of the most popular products they offer. Custom ear molds to protect you from swimmer’s ear are also available through a hearing clinic. To protect your hearing around heavy equipment or aircrafts, high attenuation earmuffs are offered. While you may be able to order some of these protective devices online, proper fitting and selection is ensured if you go to a hearing clinic where you will get one-on-one attention.
Don’t put off a trip to the hearing clinic if you are having recurring ear infections, problems with your balance, fluid in the ear or any degree of hearing loss. You’ll get the best possible care from an experienced audiologist if you go to a specialized hearing clinic.
