Women have a range of choices in golf clothing. While requirements used to be incredibly strict, now the clothing requirements for women playing golf vary, depending on the course. At public golf courses, as long as you steer clear of some obvious no-no's, you should be fine. If, however, you are golfing at a private course or country club, make sure you know the dress code before showing up.
Public Golf Course Clothing
Don't let concerns over designer golf apparel keep you off the links. Jeans, denim shorts, tee shirts and any clothing that is in poor shape doesn't belong on the golf course. However, you can play golf at most public courses with what could be best described as business casual clothing. Khakis or other long casual pants, capris, long and short sleeved shirts and sleeveless tops are all acceptable on most public golf courses.
What to Wear on a Private Course
Playing at a private course or country club requires adherence to that particular club's dress code, but that doesn't have to mean high end golf clothing. The dress code typically involves the fit of particular items. For example, skirts and shorts may be required to be a particular length, and shirts with collars may be required. You can meet all of these requirements in less expensive lines as well as more high end brands.
Consider Fit
An advantage that designer golf apparel has over less expensive brands is often in the fit. High end golf clothing is cut for style and comfort, and may be more flattering to your figure. You may find that the investment in one or two key pieces of high end golf clothing is worth it for the comfort and durability. They certainly are not required to enjoy the game of golf, however.
Wear the Right Shoes
One key part of any golfer's clothing is golf shoes. Although any type of athletic shoe is acceptable on public golf courses, golf shoes improve your traction while you are playing. Comfort and fit should come first when selecting golf shoes, although there are a wide variety of styles available as well. Mixing and matching less expensive staples, such as pants, with higher-end items such as tops can allow you to create a fashion forward look at an affordable price.
Remember Modesty
Regardless of the clothing selections you make when playing golf, you cannot argue that the choices available today are much better than choices in earlier years. In the past, modesty and style was considered more important than function. Women were expected to wear snug fitting, long sleeved tops with long, flowing skirts. While this gave a smart appearance, it made actually playing golf a bit of a challenge.
Today, women are held to the same dress standards as men on the golf course. A modest, neat and conservative appearance is acceptable and welcome at nearly any golf course. Make sure your shirt is long enough to tuck in, to prevent your midsection from being exposed while swinging the club. If you are concerned about acceptable wear, a quick phone call to the clubhouse before your game can provide reassurance. You won't be the first person to double check wardrobe requirements.
