Armstrong Williams addresses his concerns about the need for immigration reform to help secure American workers' jobs.
|
With everything else going on in the world, it's easy to forget one of the most important topics our country has been hesitant to deal with immigration. Our dependence on foreigner workers is one of the major reasons we are having a "Sputnik Moment", as President Obama called it in his recent State of the Union address.
Many argue that we need immigrants to take jobs natives deem beneath them. Others claim L1B foreign workers are necessary because not enough skilled American workers exist to fill such positions. Both of these beliefs are undermining the true strength of America and gradually degrading her future.
When times are tough, like they are now, people need those basic "shovel ready" jobs they once thought were too menial for them. When you have a family, the need to keep them clothed, fed, and sheltered outweighs any vainglorious belief that you're better than having to pick fruit or shovel dirt or mow lawns. Americans need those jobs, but when you have a ready stream of workers who will do any the job without complaint for less than the law requires, businesses simply are not going to hire legitimate employees. This is especially true if they can get away with saving a few bucks here and there.
As for the highly skilled workers that businesses claim are largely absent in America and requires that they bring in folks from overseas, I believe this is a scathing critique on our education system. Our education system has failed us. Rather than teaching kids self esteem and protecting them from failure, we need to seriously educate them in mathematics and the sciences. We've been falling behind in these areas for decades, yet we continue to put feelings over results. It's time seriously evaluate and reform our educational system to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
So it's time, America time to turn off the immigration spout. Immigration reform will force businesses to provide lower skilled jobs for Americans that need work and necessitate the education system to truly prepare future generations to compete in the modern world economy. America will only continue to lead the world in innovation, technology, and wealth if we invest in ourselves first and foremost.
