The term women artists denote women painters for musicians, sculptors, photographers and so on. The women artists always exhibit their original view point which will lead them to do innovative and beautiful art. In the beginning of the 20th century the American women started to claim their right recognition as artists. Some of the famous artists during 20th century were: Kate Freeman Clark, Marion Kayanaugh Wachtel, Lilian Amthilde Genth, Phyllis Wiener, Marian Powers and so on. Due to the male domination in 18th and 19th century they didn’t get any recognition during the period. The only women who got recognized at the period of 19th century are Mary Cassatt. She was from a rich family and learned about the arts in Europe. She moved to Paris overcoming lots of struggles and it was in the year 1868 one of the painting ‘Mandoline Player’ was accepted. Slowly the women artists of America took a good place in the world of arts and won lots of medals and trophies.
In the 19th century the women artists were inspired greatly by the French impressionists who were famous their vibrant spectrum in short strokes, shows more interests to the effects of sunlight and shadow. The women artists only inspired by their work but didn’t imitate, they developed their own styles and skills. And then some professional women artists started demanding equal rights in the art schools.
It has been found that about forty percent of all the artists in America during the 19th and 20th centuries were women. All the women artists had taken proper art training and some of them also did masters in art. Most of the women went to Europe for learning art but the fees was almost double the rate of the men. Women artists in America got a chance to take place in the entire major art exhibition in America. Some of their artworks were selected for permanent collection in the American museums in the country.
In 20th century another important revolution was made in the world of art. With the emergence of “The Eight” which was aimed in capturing the conditions of the modern urban experience. Concerns of everyday life and attitude towards the image are well demonstrated by Theresa Bernstein in a portrait of the popular actress Lois Fuller. After the 1913 armory show the women artists of America began to discover the modern aesthetics in art.
