Human papillomavirus is known to be one of the most common sexually transmitted infections, which can affect people of all age groups. It is also one of the common problems that can lead more and more people to STD clinics. This infection can affect men and women regardless of their socioeconomic status, age, or sexual orientation. In particular, genital warts can be caused by a small DNA papillomavirus that belongs to the papovavirus group. Not only are these infections time consuming and difficult to treat, they can be associated with a lot of complications with cervix in women. A person having more sexual partners has had the higher risk of HPV.

What are the symptoms?

According to a scientific study, less than 1% of people with genital warts develop symptoms. This is one of the reasons why there is no specific genital warts cure. The visible symptoms of this infection can be external genital warts, usually flesh coloured and a little harder than the surrounding tissues. They can appear flat or raised with cauliflower-like appearance detected by hand-held lens. Warts may grow in groups or singly in varying sizes. Unless picked or scratched, they do not hurt. They may continue to enlarge or remain the same size for some time. Genital warts can occur anywhere in the genital and anal area. Men may have this infection in their urethral opening, which can go unnoticed if not taken care of. In women, this infection can affect the vagina, the inner labia, and the cervix. Normally, warts may be flat or raised on the vagina and the inner labia. In some cases, this infection can also spread around the eyes, mouth, on the larynx, and the nasal area. Once the HPV enters the body, it can take certain time to develop any visible symptoms. Usually, about 30-90 days is the time interval between the HPV infection and the initial appearance of the symptoms, though in some cases it may take years. This virus can stay dormant for days, months, or even years before exhibiting any active symptoms.
Genital warts treatment

Fortunately, about 20% of small warts resolve on their own without any genital warts treatment. So an individual who has a history of this infection can wait for few weeks by delaying the treatment to see if it resolves by its own. Though there is no good evidence that the risk of transmission to others reduces with treating of warts, the severity of the symptoms can be relieved during outbreak. Let’s look at some of the effective treatments of this infection for better management of the symptoms:

Cryotherapy – Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze warts for treatment both on the cervix and externally. Doctors usually evaluate cervical warts by biopsy and colonoscopy before this therapy to make sure they are not cancerous. Usually, cryotherapy destroys the infected skin site, so it is not recommended for vaginal and anal warts.

Topical treatments – A range of creams and lotions can help in controlling the symptoms of genital warts. Most people prefer to go for natural treatments in order to avoid any side effects. Taking care of personal hygiene can also play a crucial role in treating this infection. Dietary management of warts may involve including vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids in the daily diet.
