Just like all other construction elements and methods, roofing methods are also constantly evolving to be more cost effective and to serve added purposes. The main purpose of a cool roof is to ensure the reduction of heat entrance in to a building in turn reducing cooling costs, increased comfort for inhabitants and also reduce air pollution by reflecting the sun’s rays instead of absorbing them. This is available as both angled and flat roofing systems.
Cool roofs come in mainly three types. The most popular and eco-friendly of the three is undoubtedly ‘the rooftop garden’ which involves, as the name suggests, a garden grown on top of a roof. These are also known as green roofs and can also be adapted to cool down a building with an angled roof as well as a flat roof, which is the more common variation.
A green roof can enhance the aesthetic appearance of a building, last a long time, and contribute for the purification f air by converting Carbon Dioxide in to Oxygen. The main drawbacks of a rooftop garden are the facts that it requires a lot of maintenance and the rather high installation cost.
If a green roof is not feasible in your situation you could easily cool down your building by coating the roof with a reflective coating. These are known as ‘coated roofs’ and have been reported to reflect more than 95% of the sun’s rays. This coating is generally in the form of paint and can be applied on any type of roof and common and popular enough to be stocked by your local roofing installer.
The third type of cool roofs is the ‘inherently cool roof’. This is actually a light coloured roof covering material which displays solar light and heat reflecting properties without any kind of special treatment as opposed to dark coloured materials such as asbestos sheets. Roofing materials such as polymers, light coloured fibre glass and thermoplastic white vinyl fall in to this category. A roof covered with thermoplastic white vinyl can be expected to reflect more than 80% of the sun’s rays.
Either one of these methods can be adapted to make sure that your building does not contribute to global warming and add to the already massive energy consumption as well as to create a pleasant and comfortable interior.
