SLR cameras come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and flavors. They shoot everything from 110 films to medium format. They can range from full manual to full auto functionality. The most common and easily found SLR for film photographers is the 35mm manual — these things were produced for decades and most of them are very well built. It’s relatively simple and intuitive to operate, but still offers a great deal of capture control. Most manual SLRs will have a built in light meter, so exposure settings aren’t terribly difficult. The focusing aids are generally easy to use with a high level of accuracy.
Instant cameras generally fall into various other categories of cameras (SLR, rangefinder, viewfinder, p&s). If you’re just getting into instant film, you might start down near the easy end with integral films. If you’re comfortable with that, maybe work up to pack film. For film, use professional 35mm equipment or better. Make sure you know how to use your equipment. There is no particular brand that is required. The important thing is that you know how to use your gear and can take good pictures with it.
The size of lens depends upon your style. A common lens is a 35-70. The biggest issue is often the maximum aperture available on the lens. Try to use lenses that have a max aperture of f2.8 or greater (yes, those lenses ARE more expensive - but they are worth it). A good selection of lenses:17-35 f2.8; 35-80 f2.8, and a80-200 f2.8.
The best camera will vary among wedding photographers though there will be a variety of cameras that are being used at any one time. First issue would likely be what type of film format you are using: medium format, 35mm, or digital.
