American novelist William Styron (11 June, 1925 to 1 November, 2006) was born in Newport News, Virginia, U.S. The author completed his graduation in the year 1947 and joined McGraw-Hill, New York City, as an editor. In one of his autobiographical passage, Styron mentioned about his miserable life at workplace and how he provoked his employer to fire him. After getting fired, he started writing his first novel for Earnest Publishing House. Lie Down in Darkness was the first novel of Styron, which chronicled the life of a dysfunctional Virginia family. The author got an overwhelming response for this novel and he also received critical acclaim for his work. There are very few authors in history, who have achieved success after publishing just one book, and Styron is one of them. The celebrated author received prestigious Rome Prize for his outstanding work.
William Styron published his next novel Sophie's Choice in the year 1979. This novel generated quite a lot of controversy because it depicts the story of a non-Jewish victim of Holocaust with profanity and explicit sexuality. This novel was banned in South Africa and Poland, while it was censored by the Soviet Union. The story of this novel depicts the life of a Polish Roman Catholic, who survived Auschwitz, which was a German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp. Styron had to face quite a lot of controversy for this novel but later this book earned him a National Book Award in the year 1980. This controversial novel was adapted into a movie in the year 1982 in which the character of Sophie was played by the iconic actress Meryl Streep. This movie earned five nominations in Academy Awards, and Meryl bagged the award for best actress for her amazing performance in the movie.
Readership of Styron expanded with his book Darkness Visible in the year 1990. This memoir of William Styron was first published in Vanity Fair, and it soon became a book after the lecture speech of writer, in Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, was added to it. This book became one of the bestsellers, which Styron wrote in his lifetime. In this book, he depicted his own life after facing severe depression. He portrayed the psychic landscape of depression in his book and he also wrote about illuminating path of recovery. Some of the other famous works by Styron are In the Clap Shack and This Quiet Dust. The author died from pneumonia in the year 2006, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable novels and write-ups.
