This is a city in the province of Alicante. Alcoy is located 562 meters above sea level and it has 61,698 inhabitants. This city is usually called the town of bridges because there are three rivers passing through - Riquer, Benissa and Molinari. The town has a typical Mediterranean climate with hot winters and dry summers.
A little bit about Alcoy’s history…
This town has a very interesting history. The first people lived here before 60 000 years ago. There are many monuments from the Neolithic, Metal and Bronze Age. The Archaeological Museum of Alcoy is a great place to visit and learn more about Serreta, La Mola de Serelles, El Puig and the Salt.
Bendepord Castle
This castle is now called Barchell Castle. It is not clear when it was built, probably sometime in the twelfth century. Unfortunately, it is really hard to get a chance to visit it because Barchell Castle is actually a private property and it is currently under restoration.

Alcoy is well known as the city of bridges due to the somewhat strange topography that caused early inhabitants to build bridges. The first two bridges form the network. They are Penáguila and San Roque Old Bridge, dating from the early seventeenth century. They allowed the whole industry on the river Riquer to be accessible. However, there are several other bridges that are worth mentioning...
The Pechina Bridge dates from 1863 and it stands over the Benissa River. Moreover, it has five big arches which bring it 29 meters above the water.
The Bridge of the Seven Moons was originally built as a train bridge. Now it is used for pedestrians and serves as an urban land to land bond.
Puente de San Rogue is a characteristic bridge from the nineteenth century, when the economy rose. It played a vital role in transportation for the industry.
Other bridges are Canalejas Viaduct, Puente de San Jorge, Puente de Fernando Reig, and they all have their own historic value in the mysterious city of Alcoy.
This area covers almost 20000 hectares and it is divided into two parks- the Sierra de Mariola Park and the Carrascal de la Font Roja Park.
Having a fun time in Alcoy
Alcoy has a lot of cultural events that are certainly worth visiting. One of them is the Moors and Christian’s fiesta, which is held in April each year and all this is done in honor of St. George. This is the biggest and the most popular event, but there are lots of other music, theater and cultural events as well.
