Ajmer is located in the south west of Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan. One of the most traveled tourist destinations in India . Set at the point where the rocky Aravalli Hills end and the Thar Desert begins, this was originally the stronghold of the powerful Chauhan Dynasty of Rajputs, who built India's first ever hill fort here in the 7th century. The small town of Ajmer, 78 miles west of Jaipur, played a surprisingly important role in India's history. One of the first contacts between the Mughal King Jahangir and Sir Thomas Roe took place here in 1616. The Scindias took over the city in 1818 and then handed it over to the British. Ajmer was captured by many dynasties, which came and left leaving behind unforgettable marks of their culture and custom. Today, Ajmer is a renowned pilgrimage center for both Hindus and Muslims.
