The very first name that comes to mind when we hear Agra is the Taj Mahal. Agra is a bustling town in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, which is home to the Taj Mahal.

Also called the city of Taj, Agra is approximately 200 km from the capital city of Delhi. Quite popular among travellers from India as well as other parts of the world, Agra witnesses a continuous flow of tourist through out the year. The best time to visit Agra is in the winter months from October to March. However, the best is between November and January, when the weather is pleasant and temperatures are down.

Agra was once the capital of the mighty Mughal Empire, which ruled the undivided India from 1526 to the late 17th century. Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar, popularly known as Akbar was the greatest of all the Mughal emperors. Traces of the Mughal Empire can clearly be seen in Agra, which prides itself as a magnificent city of monuments. Besides the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort is another popular tourist attraction in Agra.

The Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, was built by Shah Jahan in the 17th century in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaj Mahal. It took close to 20 years and 20,000 labourers, engineers and artisans to build the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan was the son of Mughal Emperor Jehangir. Red Fort, another magnificent monument in Agra was designed and built by the great Mughal emperor, Akbar, in the 16th century. The Red Fort was initially built as a military establishment but later Mughal rulers made many additions to the main structure.

The Red Fort is situated on the banks of the Yamuna in Agra. The fort is called Red Fort because it is built in red sandstone. Within the Fort, there are some of the most exquisite architecture of the Mughal Period - like the Diwan-i-Khas, Diwan-i-Am, Pearl Mosque, Moti Masjid, and Jahangiri Mahal.

Just not a city of history and culture, Agra is also a fascinating shopping destination. Agra is well known for its leather products. Leather products of Agra like shoes, garments, handbags and other leather accessories are of very fine quality. One can also shop for brassware, stone handicrafts and the stone replica of Taj Mahal. Other most popular item that one must buy from Agra is “Petha” a kind of sweet, made from vegetables. Agra Petha is quite popular sweet item in Agra.
