ADHS or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is one of the most disorders that kids face. There are various stages of this disorder, and if care is not taken properly in the childhood, it may continue up to adolescent or even to adulthood. There are three basic sub-types of ADHD- predominantly hyperactive impulsive, predominantly inattentive, and combined hyperactive impulsive and inattentive. Kids who are calm and less likely to act out may be the sufferers of inattentiveness; but this is often overlooked by the parents and the teachers.
Though no one can correctly say the causes of ADHD, but some research found that genes play a vital role in causing this problem among kids. Moreover, factors like brain injury, nutrition and the social environment may also turn out to be the cause of ADHD. Children with ADHD who carry a particular version of a certain gene have thinner brain tissue in the areas of the brain associated with attention. Children who have gone through a brain injury may showcase some symptoms similar to ADHD. However, a very small number of children with ADHD have suffered from traumatic brain injury. Another study has revealed that when mothers are more exposed to cigarette or other alcoholic substances, the chances of these children getting ADHD symptoms becomes higher.
Kids with ADHD symptoms always need more attention from their loved ones. School is a place for them where they can mix up with other kids. This acts as a mental relief to them as they get other kids who are also suffering from the same problem. Apart from the medical therapy, there are some other activities also that can help these kids to come out of their particular mental state. Some of the after school activities are briefly discussed below:-
Scouting- Scouting is probably one of the most effective activities for both boys and girls suffering from ADHD. Apart from the physical activities, scouting also helps the kids to focus on their works. In it, a particular instructor monitors the activities of the kids and it is also a very a structured play. It also makes use of various learning styles. Consistent peer interaction, close adult supervision, competition, and, most of all, fun are the best part of this activity.
Drama Clubs or Acting- If you have a child suffering from ADHD, you can easily admit your child to a drama or acting class after the school. Drama is actually presenting a life situation. Through drama, kids learn about different life situations and thus can also experience their importance.
Swimming- Swimming is always considered as a very effective sport for every age group. It is most seen in case of kids that their fine and gross motor skills get developed through swimming.
Art Class or Music- Art and music are two great ways to help your child express the self. Just remember that it's not about how well they draw, sing, or play an instrument; the most important thing is that they get a chance to say something about themselves.
Being parents, we can give our kids a world of happiness with our proper support and patience. ADHD is not an end, but can be a new beginning with the love of everyone.
