Prizefight boxing is one of the most cherished traditions in american sporting history.
|
Like baseball, boxing has crossed generational lines, contributed to some of sport’s most iconic moments, and embedded itself in the very fabric of American culture. However, unlike America’s pastime, boxing evokes a primitive mysticism which tugs at the very nature of human beings — the primal ideology of “Two men enter, one man leaves.”
Whether it is Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, or Floyd Mayweather Jr. entering the ring, there is an inimitable fervor when the house lights dim. A single spotlight shadows the fighter from promenade to corner, and once the anticipatory rush seems to reach its apex, the initial bell tolls.
That rush is what inspired Frank Sinatra in 1970 to become a photographer for Time Magazine during the Ali vs. Frazier I fight, and what continues to motivate today’s most celebrated figures. From entertainers and royalty, to politicians and celebrities, there is not a major prize fight that goes by that an important figure from each is not enjoying the front-row action.
Although Las Vegas is regarded as, “The Boxing Capital of the World,” the most impressive prizefight experience is not in the corner of Sin city, but in the sequestered bright lights of Uncasville, Connecticut.
Ranked as the second-largest casino in the United States, the 364,000 square feet of Mohegan Sun emerges from the vast landscape of pine and aspen like a mountain of illumination.
The distinct spirit of the Mohegan Sun is not vested within the adrenaline infused spirit of world-class pugilism, but in the exclusivity of their unique adventure. Whereas Sin City awaits your arrival, Mohegan Sun will come directly to your doorstep.
Relative to the guest’s residential location, Mohegan Sun will either have the limousine drive directly to the Mohegan Sun Hotel & Casino or to the nearest airport. In the event the guest is driven to the airport, the Mohegan Sun will provide a private helicopter ride directly from the airport to their helipad in the front of the casino.
Upon arrival at the casino, guests will be immediately greeted by their night’s host, who is fully dedicated to accommodating any specific need — reservations at a restaurant, tickets to an event, or exclusive bottle service.
After check in, the host will guide you to the clandestine 36th floor, where an exclusive tour through the private gaming sector and lounge on the floor awaits. at the same time, specifically trained hotel employees will transport your luggage directly to the Royal Suite.
Sitting atop the Mohegan Sun, the Royal Suite provides guests with a panoramic view of the lush Connecticut scenery, while allowing them to relax in pure opulence. upon entering the Royal Suite, guests are met with the regal aesthetics of dark mahogany floors within spacious modern architecture. Designed to establish optimum comfort, the living room reflects the neat, encircled architecture of the ceiling – providing a table centerpiece, with plush chairs and couches. aside from the wide-open view of the verdant landscape, the living room is highlighted by the fully stocked, wrap around bar.
Past the living room, guests will find the sleeping quarters. Rich in cream colors, the Royal Suite’s bedroom encapsulates the individual with a warm feeling of relaxation. in addition, the Royal Suite features three bathrooms with Jacuzzis, a customized shoe-shiner, and a grand piano. For all of the perceived anarchy on the casino floors, the Royal Suite truly provides the guest with a feeling of seclusion.
Depending on your arrival time, you will have the day free to indulge in all of the Mohegan Sun amenities. The evening’s host is a phone call away, so do not hesitate to ask for reservations at the Elemis private spa, an appointment at the exclusive salon (both on the 33rd floor), or simply a suggestion.
The Elemis Spa “was born in Britain as a spa-therapy brand to answer a need for skin care that is scientifically advanced but grounded within nature.” Service standouts include: Tri-Enzyme Resurfacing Facial (60 minutes/$180), La Therapie Hydrapeel Facial (50 minutes/$180), Men’s Spa Escape (3 hours/$345), aroma Stone Therapy (75 minutes/$210), and the ultimate Love Spa ceremony (2 hours 30 minutes/$625).
But be wary of the time, as the prime dinner reservation time is 5:30 P.M.
When it comes to dining at the Mohegan Sun, the premier service at Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain supersedes all. A perfect blend of deep brown shades with affectionate reds, yellows, and oranges allows Bar Americain to create an undeniably warm atmosphere. Once seated, guests are encouraged to scan the illustrious dinner menu, as well as the extensive wine list.
Constructed to “celebrate the food of America with a healthy dose of the bold flavors Bobby Flay is most known for”, the appetizers feature standouts like the succulent Gulf Shrimp & Grits with Bacon, Green Onions and Garlic.
Famously known for his innovative culinary skills on the grill, Bobby Flay’s Bar americain steaks: Rib-Eye, new York Strip, Filet Mignon, are some of the finest steaks available. Tender in preparation, each steak is served with Bar amercain’s legendary Steak Sauce, and a choice of one of their supreme side dishes: Sweet Potato Gratin, Griddled Mushrooms & Onions, just to name a few.
Aside from the premium service of the wait staff, expect a visit from the Executive Chef to confirm your guaranteed dining pleasure. Although Bar Americain presents an ambiance one could enjoy all night, at 7:00 pm your host will be awaiting your presence outside the arena doors to guide you through an exclusive night of fights.
Passing the neverending lines, your host will lead you from the upstairs terrace to downstairs where you will meet Bob Yalen, Director of Sports & Entertainment at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
“With promoter tags (all-access pass) you will be able to go anywhere and do anything you want in the entire arena,” guarantees Yalen. demonstrating his promise, Yalen guides you under the tunnel out on to the arena floor — giving the feeling of a fighter’s entrance — and over to the front row.
Once seated, indulge in the atmosphere — a sold-out arena, speckled with celebrities to your left and right, all with the undercurrent of serious anticipation. The sensation is almost palpable. As the bell rings to announce the night’s first fight, you have the opportunity to fulfill any curiosity — mingle with celebrities, go backstage, or meet the headline fighters.
“Now the moment you have all been waiting for,” bellows the legendary Michael Buffer. With just mere feet separating you and the action, it becomes apparent that the feeling of a boxing match transcends sports. With each passing round your hair stands on end, your nerves become taut, you find that you are not just physically, but emotionally invested.
Immediately following the last fight of the evening, use your “Promoter” tag to meet announcers, referees, trainers, and other fighters. “We can even get you in the ring for pictures,” promises Yalen. “We will make any dream you have come true.”
While the night may seem over, guests still have the entire night open for gambling in the private game room, or perhaps grabbing a drink on the top floor at Leffingwells.
Recognized for having the world’s largest indoor planetarium, Leffingwells offers a remarkable variety of martinis, to be enjoyed while “lounging under the stars.” if guests prefer a more private setting, Sachem Lounge features free food and drinks in their starry, tranquil oasis.
Before departure in the morning, reserve a table on the terrace at Todd English’s Tuscany, the winner of the 2006, 2007, and 2008 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. Enjoy a refreshing breakfast experience in front of the Taughannick waterfalls, with classic cuisines such as Castagnaccios (chestnut and pine pancakes), smoked salmon, and their famous Eggs Benedict.
As the limo either drives directly towards your home or the helipad, take a look back at the Mohegan Sun, and know that for one night you were not just able to witness an American sport tradition, but you got to be a part of it.
