There was a meeting in July of 2005 held by the FDA that decided to leave Advair off the market for numerous reasons. Advair is a type of drug that is designed to eliminate wheezing as well as other difficulties that comes with asthma. It helps with shortness of breath as well as chest pain. Advair contains the ingredient salmeterol which can be found in Serevent. There have been several concerns that have come up over the years and the FDA has reported that some individuals have suffered several episodes of exacerbations.
Advair is also known as Fluticasone which is a form of steroid that helps with reducing the amount of swelling that is blocking the airway. It’s referred to as a long acting medication and helps with relaxing and opening airways and the lungs. This makes it easier for you to breath.
There are bigger studies of Advair that show a small increase in deaths from taking Advair. For individuals who suffer with asthma and it progressively gets more severe, there should not be combined drug treatments. This can have adverse effects and make things worse. Advair is something that is inhaled and helps open up the body’s airways for easier breathing. It’s not going to cure your asthma.
The FDA has listed this drug as a black box warning and this is the most severe level by the FDA. This was added to Advair’s label in the year 2003. This was all based on results by the Salmeterol Research Trial. There were warnings that were also issued after there were a number of individuals experiencing increased asthma exacerbations. There were studies showing African Americans were at higher risk of this.
Side Effects of Advair
• Increased risk of more severe asthma
• Elevated blood pressure
• Irregular heart rate
• Irregular heart beat
• Increased chance of developing osteoarthritis
• Cataracts
• Glaucoma
There was a rather small amount of deaths that has happened as a result of taking Advair but there is still room to be concerned about this medication. The FDA had also asked its panel to take a look at Advair and review it. The panel consisted of 14 experts in asthma and reviewed this medication in July of 2005.
The FDA typically doesn’t listen to its committee’s advice but the actual agency typically does listen. Once the panel met, there were 3 drugs that were recognized and included Advair to remain on the current market. However, the committee began urging there to be even more research to help better determine if this medication would actually worsen or even help improve asthma sufferers condition.
You should never begin using Advair if you are having an asthma attack and this can increase the risk of death. Never take more than what is prescribed and you should talk to your doctor about how the side effect could affect you. If you have heart disease, liver disease, thyroid disorders as well as infections you should talk to your doctor before taking this medication.
