Dentistry profession is a great and highly rewarded profession in today’s time. Dentistry profession requires a degree in dentistry in order to be a professional dentist. In India, dentistry course can be pursued after successful completion of Senior Secondary School examination (10+2). Candidates willing to take dentistry as a profession can opt for BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) which is a 5-year degree course. Four years are meant for theoretical study and 1 year is for internship purpose. An entrance test is conducted for admission to BDS course. Entrance level is conducted at both state level and national level. Candidates who complete BDS course successfully can opt for higher studies like MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) which is a two-year course.
A dentist has a variety of lucrative job options available after the successful completion of the course. Dentist can get job in hospitals (govt. and private), in clinics, in army, and can even set up his/her own private clinic. After completing dentistry course dentist has a number of job profiles that are available. The main job profiles are of a General Dentist, Cosmetic Dentist, Orthodontist, Periodontist, Oral Surgeon, etc. A general dentist is responsible for oral health care, fluoride treatments, cavity fillings, etc. Cosmetic dentist is responsible for the appearance and the tasks associated with cosmetic dentistry are teeth whitening, teeth bonding etc. For the alignment of jaw and the position of the teeth orthodontist is consulted. Periodontist cares for gums and tissues of the teeth. For the need of oral surgery, the healthcare professionals consult Oral surgeon.
