Most people enjoy the effects of an open fire and with an abundance of cast iron fireplaces now available you can truly enjoy a cosy evening in sat by the fire. Cast iron fires were common place many years ago but with the effects of pollution becoming an increasing reality they slowly changed to the gas fire.

However cast iron fireplaces are coming back in to fashion in a big way. The cast iron fire offers a versatile method of heating the home by burning solid fuels or gas whilst providing a truly enticing piece of decor.

Ever since cast iron was first manufactured some 500 years ago we have been aware of its element of transferring heat. Formed from iron that was too big to be wrought came the production of iron that was cast within a mould making cast iron. This was common place within the construction industry within the 18 hundreds and onwards with the construction of bridges and much more.

The main factor recognised with cast iron was the fact that it was relatively cheap to produce and this soon led to the introduction of cast iron products within the home. The first cast iron products introduced in to the home for heating purposes were the register grates for the living room mainly introduced within the middle classes.

The ranges started to multiply and soon started to replace the open fires which at the time had been the only method of cooking and heating the home for many hundreds of years. This very quickly led to the manufacture of other cast iron components such as the saucepan and other cookware which we still use today. With cast iron being relatively the normal householders were now able to start to replace their existing open fires with the register grate. This was at the time a real innovative measure for not only did they provide warmth for the home at affordable prices but they also featured a small hob which was ideal for heating the kettle.

As time moved forward and the Victorians started to develop new fashions the standard register grate was soon replaced by creative fireplaces that featured wooden mantels combined with a cast iron back plate or panel. The back panel was actually used to help radiate heat from the fire but due to its shape enabled it to be developed in to stunningly creative designs which added the aesthetics of decor to the fire. Each of the panels included a slider situated on both sides of the fire in which you could sit elaborately decorated ceramic tiles. This could literally transform the aesthetics of the living room and soon became a method in which the builders would create their very own creative designs.

With the start of the 20th century blacksmiths started to produce cast iron dog grates which were ideal for fitting to the fireplace and this led to almost any decoration the homeowner desired. Often within wealthy households a Coat of Arms would be embellished on a raised back panel. This would be the main feature of the fireplace making a stunning focal point for the room.

Today the abundance of traditional fires and fireplace surrounds is amazing, all manufactured from the finest cast iron. You can choose from fireplaces styled from the Victorian period or if you prefer the Georgian period. These are elaborately created to reproduce the look and feel of the original fires whilst through improvements in manufacturing techniques has allowed the fires to run on environmentally friendly fuels. Each fireplace are created to be extremely simple to use whilst offer a highly efficient manner of heating the home.
