Car technology is ever improving and manufacturers have come up with new safety features which help you with everything from parallel parking more safely to preventing you from having minor accidents by bumping into the car in front while driving.
Now researchers at the University of Bologna in Italy have come up with a safety feature which detects accidents when they occur and then tell other drivers about so they can stop and thus avoid a potential multi-car pile-up. The Italian scientists hope this new automatic accident detection system will reduce the number of vehicles involved in pile-ups by up to 40 percent.
The first car to set off the alarm warning the other drivers about the accident would be the actual car involved in the accident and for the system to work cars would have to be fitted with acceleration sensors. But because this warning system would be using a wireless communication system it has to also be selective in order not to flood and crash the system. They way it would work is that although all cars within a range of between 300 and 1000 metres of the car sending the initial signal would receive this signal, only one of them will actually pass it on to cars further away.
This new technology could be fitted either into the car’s dashboard or into the sat-nav and the Italian scientists plan to carry out road tests in America this summer in partnership with engineers at Toyota. Whether Toyota will actually then implement this technology if it works is too early to say but if it does work in practice and the technology gets integrated in sat-navs, you could have it fitted regardless of whether you drive a Toyota in California or a Ford S-Max, Hastings.
