Fouling on heat exchangers is mostly caused by unfavorable water, high temperatures, and impurities in water. In a heat exchanger there is water on one side and a product that needs to be cooled or heated on the other side. Depending on what is on the product side of a heat exchanger, fouling may be worse on this side than on the water side. Fouling is also caused by bio fouling micro-organisms, scaling, and corrosion on the water side of a heat exchanger. Bio fouling is caused by bacteria or algae in water which cause the formation of a biofilm on the surface of the heat exchangers. Scaling is caused by salts which have dissolved in water and corrosion happens due to aggressive water. Once a heat exchanger becomes inefficient due to fouling it requires disassembling so that it can be cleaned manually or by use of chemicals. Cleaning a big heat exchanger requires production to be stopped and this may take 2-3 days.
