Summer is here and it is time for some fun in the sun! For many people, summer is their favorite season of the year and they patiently wait three-quarters of the year for it. But, for those with an ostomy, the reality of warmer temps, vacation destinations, watersports and uncertain schedules may bring both excitement and stress.

While it is important to tend to an ostomy with care, this should not come at the cost of enjoying the summer months – our tips can help you make the most of the best season of the year.

And ostomy is a surgically created opening in the body designed to discharge the body’s waste. A stoma is the actual end of the ureter or small or large intestine that has been rerouted through the abdominal wall and protrudes from the skin.

If you are still adjusting to a new ostomy, keep in mind the basics, like watching your diet, carrying extra supplies, wearing appropriate clothing, and taking care when lifting objects. Once you have become accustomed to life with an ostomy and are familiar with your new routine, you will probably find it’s not much different than before: people with ostomies typically wear the same clothes, work the same jobs – in short, it’s business as usual!

During the summer months, there are a few more considerations to stay healthy, safe and comfortable:

• Heat and perspiration may compromise the adhesive on your pouch. Carry extra supplies and keep an eye on the seal until you know how your product of choice will react to the warmer temperatures and exposure to sweat, as well as products like sunscreen.

• Consider augmenting your usual supplies with mini-pouches and waterproof adhesives that will allow more confidence for sports like running and swimming. Other products to consider are waterproof tape or elastic ostomy belt with a two-piece system, which will allow for longer wear time.

• Closely monitor the skin around your ostomy. According to the Ostomy Guide, “skin is more susceptible to breakdown when it is hot and moist. This includes the area where the ostomy appliance sits, which can form rashes because of the friction of the pouch against the skin combined with heat.” An ostomy pouch cover is recommended to protect the skin, allowing for a more comfortable user experience.
