Nepali is the most widely used language in Sikkim. Other languages spoken by the locals are Bhutia, Lepcha, Limbu, Newari, Gurung, Sherpa, Sunwar, Rai, Mangar and Tamang.
Where is Sikkim
Sikkim is a land locked state in the northeast region of the Indian mainland. Sikkim shares international boundaries with Nepal to the west, People’s Republic of China to the north and east and Bhutan to the southeast. West Bengal lies to the south of Sikkim. The third highest peak in the world, Kanchenjunga, is located in Sikkim.
Major Cities
Gangtok, Ghezing, Namchi, Rabdentse and Mangan are prominent cities in Sikkim. Gangtok is the administrative capital and the largest city in Sikkim. Rabdentse was the second capital of Sikkim till the Nepalese army invaded Sikkim. Mangan is the main city and district headquarters of North Sikkim. Namchi is a prominent tourist destination and Ghezing is the main city in western Sikkim.
Places to Visit
Sikkim is a state whose natural beauty is spellbinding. Sikkim, located on the Himalayas, is the home of chiseled peaks and glacial valleys that is bound to attract anybody who visits the place. Sikkim has some of the most beautiful natural lakes in the country.
The Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary and Kanchandzonga National Park in North Sikkim house some of the rarest species of flora and fauna. Chungthang, Singiek, KabiLungtsok and Yumthanga are other sites to be visited in North Sikkim. Pelling, Yuksong and Rabdentse ruins are places in west Sikkim that have been gaining prominence. Yuksong is fast becoming an urban settlement owing to the influx of the tourists from various parts of the world.
Tashi View Point, Ganesh Tok and Hanuman Tok, Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary and Fambong La Wildlife Sanctuary located in east Sikkim are important tourist destinations. South Sikkim is completely filled with picturesque hills like Tendong Hill, Maenam Hill, Varsey, Borong and Ravangla.
Yak Safari, hang gliding, mountain biking, trekking, mountaineering and river rafting are adventure sports offered by the Sikkim Tourism.
How to Reach
Air: Sikkim does not have any airports in the state. The nearest domestic airport is the Bagdogra airport in Siliguri, West Bengal. From there, other major Indian cities can be reached. There is a shuttle helicopter service between Gangtok and Siliguri that operates once a day. To reach international destinations, flights need to be boarded at the Kolkata International Airport.
Rail: Sikkim, located in a remote area, does not have proper railway infrastructure. The nearest railway stations to Sikkim are New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri in West Bengal. After reaching West Bengal, the tourists can commute to other parts of India without much trouble. Railway lines are being laid in Sikkim and will be operational from 2015.
Road: There are national highways that connect Gangtok with Siliguri. A highway from Melli connects the western parts of Sikkim. The mountain pass of Nathu La is the only open link between India and China, and this site is in Sikkim. Sikkim’s southern and western regions are well connected to Kalimpong and Darjeeling in West Bengal.
