Abbey Road staff members are some of the most experienced and caring professionals in the student travel business. Abbey Road students are in excellent hands when they travel.

“The supervision was everything a parent would hope for their child; at the same time, the teachers and counselors were personable, fun and kind,” said Andrea Kinnard, whose daughter Lizzy went to St. Laurent-du-Var in 2009. “As the parent of an Abbey Road student, I'd say your personnel are all top notch, from the folks in the office to those "on the front lines" travelling with the students. Thank you for all your professionalism.”

When Sam Young (not his real name) traveled to Cádiz, Spain with Abbey Road the summer before he started high school and lost his bag during a classroom field trip, Cádiz Program Director Jose Gregory immediately took him to the police station and helped him file a report. Gregory, a Spanish instructor who grew up in Puerto Rico, has worked for Abbey Road for over five years.

“When I was at the police station, [Jose] acted as my interpreter and cared, just as much as me, about my lost possessions,” said Sam.

The bag was eventually found, but that wasn’t the only challenge Sam faced on his trip: He suffered an onset of stomach cramps on an excursion to Santa Maria, probably due to dehydration and fatigue. Abbey Road staff took care of him throughout the rest of the excursion, making sure he had enough to eat and drink. Upon their return to Cádiz, they took Sam to the hospital, where he received X-rays and was given a clean bill of health. Abbey Road staff made sure to monitor Sam’s health daily after that, and Sam ended up having the trip of a lifetime.

“Thank you so much for helping me without complaint for the entire trip in Cádiz, no matter what kind of situation I was in,” Sam wrote later, in a letter to the staff. “Your kindest act was in taking me to the hospital and staying there with me for hours upon end.”

Another Cádiz student, Sally O’Neal (not her real name), became ill on her trip and was taken by Abbey Road staff to see a doctor; because she was from the U.S., the doctors had to follow World Health Organization protocol and quarantine her to make sure she didn’t have H1N1. Her host family and the University residence, afraid of the spread of H1N1, refused to host her, so Abbey Road staff put her up in a hostel.

Quarantined alone in her room at the hostel, Sally was lucky enough to be visited three or more times a day by Abbey Road staff members bearing food, who took her for walks and monitored her symptoms. After several days, Sally was found not to have H1N1, and her quarantine was lifted.

Abbey Road alumni like Sam and Sally rave about the quality of Abbey Road’s personnel.

“I appreciated that the staff on my program were able to make our safety their number one priority while still treating us as young adults,” said alumna Jenny Hirsch, who went to Florence in 2006. “The intimate size also allows the staff to do more than just keep track of each student. During my time in Florence, the staff took the time to get to know me as a person, and this made my experience really special. The energy, enthusiasm, positivity, and genuine compassion of each staff member were an integral part of why I had such a wonderful summer.”
