The Fiat 500 has become a regular sight in cities and towns around Britain. It’s a small and nippy run-around that has also attracted a celebrity following which probably haven’t done the car’s image any harm.
But if you like the look of the Fiat 500 but don’t want to be seen to follow the crowd there is an even more stylish alternative out there, the Abarth 500. The Abarth is the performance model of the Fiat 500 and these special versions of the Fiat which can be found at your local Abarth dealer are called Abarth Punto Evo, Abarth 500 and Abarth 500C. The latter is the cabriolet version and has a top speed of 127 mph and reaches 62 mph in 8.1 seconds.
So look-wise the cars are very similar to the regular Fiat 500 models but under the bonnet you’ll find a performance car which will out-do the regular Italians. It’s basically a pint-sized supercar. The Abarth 500 1.4-litre engine delivers 135 bhp but still only emits 155 g/km of CO2 and does 33 mpg on average driving.
Historically Abarth is an Italian racing car maker founded by Carlo Abarth and Armando Scagliarini. The car company has co-operated with Fiat since 1952 and has produced various tuning kits for Fiat since the early beginnings. Fiat took over Abarth in 1971 and made Abarth its racing division. But in 2007 it all changed again with the re-launch of the brand and it’s now seen a separate division within Fiat producing their more spirited vehicles.
So if you’re looking for a smaller city car why not test drive an Abarth and see if this Italian spirit doesn’t tickle your fancy.
