The Roman Colosseum or Coliseum, originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, was commisioned in AD 72 by Emperor Vespasian. It was completed by his son, Titus, in 80, with later improvements by Domitian. At the time of its construction, the Colosseum had the capacity of seating around 50,000 spectators. Initially, the amphitheater was used for holding gladiatorial contests and public spectacles, such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles and dramas based on Classical mythology.
The Colosseum is part of the new Seven Wonders of the World, voted in 2007 via the Internet by more than 90 million people: the Colosseum, Rome’s most famous landmark, an icon recognised around the world. The Colosseum is the most famous Roman amphitheatre, located in the heart of the city of Rome. The Colosseum, as the entire historical centre of Rome, is inserted in the list of World Heritage monuments recognized by UNESCO. Guided tours of Colosseum thus constitute a fundamental and unmissable stop for those who decide to visit the city of Rome. The stage, in Antiquity, of spectacular fights between gladiators and many other public events (hunting performances, recreations of famous battles, dramas of classical mythology), the Flavian Amphitheatre exposes today with clarity, the constructive and architectural conceptions of the first Imperial Age based, respectively, on the curved line and surrounding of the elliptical plan and on the complexity of construction systems.
Every year there are around 5 million people who experience a guided tour of Colosseum, a number that remains constant over time and confirms the great interest from the world of tourism in this impressive testimony to the imperial past and, in general, in the traces of Antiquity. It is true that there are many opportunities for guided tours to Rome but, among these, the most requested are visits to the Colosseum: numerous pathways and guided itineraries adapted to all requirements, exclusive tours, such as those provided by the Professional Rome Guide, which include sightseeing the whole archaeological area of the Roman Forum and Palatine.
