The recent events in Egypt may have paved the way for a bold new era in the region, but times such as these can hit the tourist trade hard. It is estimated that over 210, 000 tourists cut short or cancelled their holiday in Egypt while the revolution was in full swing, and in a country where over two million people are employed in the tourism industry, that can be a bitter financial pill to swallow. However, Egypt is a massive country, and outside of the major metropolitan centres of Suez, Alexandria, Cairo, and Luxor, there were few signs that any upheaval was taking place.

Somewhat surprisingly, many places that were not involved in the revolution, such as the resorts around the Red Sea, didn’t do too badly out of the whole deal, with travellers taking advantage of the amazing discounts that were available at the time. While the country has settled down now, and Africas newest democracy can look to the future with optimism, these safe havens have retained their appeal, and if you are quick, you can pick up a real bargain. Perhaps the most popular resort area near the Red Sea is Sharm El Sheikh, an area that can lay claim to spotless sandy beaches, fantastic weather, and brilliant amenities. Here are some of the nicests resorts in the area.

The Radisson Blu Resort. Based on the Sinai Peninsula, this 5 star pleasure palace can lay claim to 3 full size pools, 3 competition standard tennis courts, a number of gyms and jogging tracks, and a diving centre upon its 30 acres of private land. So, if you want to stay active on your holiday, this could be the luxury hotel for you.

The Ritz Carlton. Ritz Carlton are known around the world for their fantastic service and truly luxurious hotels, and the Ritz Carlton Sharm el Sheikh lives up to this lofty reputation. At this hotel you can enjoy lush palm gardens, rivers, a private beach, and the hotels very own coral reef and diving centre. There are also plenty of shops and spas, and a massage tent that overlooks the Red Sea.

The Iberotel Lido. If you are on a bit more of a budget, this 4 star family hotel with rooftop swimming pool facilities could be just right for you. It is set on a small plateau overlooking Na ama Bay, and there are some unbelievable views on offer from the roof deck. Just 2 minutes away is the hotels own diving centre, and horse riding, golf and mountain bike activities are all available within a short walking distance.
