Choosing an Inground swimming pool what is available?
Choosing an in-ground swimming pool can be a daunting challenge. So let’s make choosing that swimming pool a simple exercise.
We have all heard of concrete pools, fibreglass pools, and ceramic composite pools.
The good news is that all swimming pools and spas are a great addition to your lifestyle and family fun, and as with all commodities, each will offer different benefits on how they do their job.
First of all, the easiest way to start is with a brief story of the history of in-ground swimming pools.
As far back as the Roman days, and even before then, in-ground swimming pools and spas were a serious part of living. In those days the only building material was concrete, and this remained the case until some 40 years ago. The choice was simple – in-ground concrete swimming pool, whether it was in block form, poured form, or much later sprayed concrete placement. Only one choice made selection simple – concrete pool or nothing!.
Between us, also about 40 to 50 years ago there was an in-ground pool tried with a vinyl liner and other stuff, but these did not take off to any great extent.
However, about forty years ago the fibreglass in-ground pool and spa became a serious alternative to a concrete pool. Fibreglass pools are made in a factory and had some attractive benefits. During a few product development years it finally became a quality product in the early 80s. Now there were two choices – concrete or fibreglass pools.
About 12 years ago, an exciting new development was unfolding based on fibreglass in-ground pools. Compass Swimming Pools were embracing ceramic composite technology as well as developing a brilliant new surface finish called Crystite which later on became Bi-luminite. They actually patented the procedure, allowing it to be sold to their Dealer network, and also made it available under licence to overseas interests. To date there are in excess of 100,000 ceramic composite in-ground swimming pools and spas worldwide.
Now there are three choices – concrete, fibreglass, and ceramic composite pools.
How can I decide which of theses will suit my needs?
It can be a less than simple task, especially when one considers the many variables that can exist, and not just in product. Quality of workmanship and ethical business practice has to also be very high in your decision making process.
We said previously that all in-ground pools will add a new dimension to your way of life. You owe it to yourself to not just believe ‘what the salesman said’ or what the advertisement promised. Make sure you talk to actual customers of the companies you are considering, and check with local building authorities as to those companies.
After all it is ‘in-ground’, and there it stays. No trade in’s are possible if you don’t like it.
In brief, let’s look at a comparison to get you on your way.
Concrete in-ground swimming pools and spas have the decided advantage of any shape or size because they are constructed in your yard, The once ‘rough’ textures with their finishes (by the way still sometimes used today) have been given many alternatives for a more pleasant feel to touch. The one serious downside is that because it is built on site, the end product depends on the integrity and accuracy of the builder. It can also be quite a lengthy time process as various trades are used to complete the construction.
Fibreglass in-ground pools and spas claim their advantage of being factory built ensures a very accurate delivery of product. Exactly what you ordered is what you get. Naturally, they are very much limited in shape and size when compared with freeform concrete. The smooth interior finish is very appealing, and the modern range of colours has added to their popularity. The downside is that once again the pool shell has to be installed in the ground by humans, and we must rely on their integrity and expertise to ensure this is done to Australian Standards, as it must be with concrete.
Ceramic composite in-ground pools and spas have taken the whole industry to a new and modern level. With the incredible strength and flexibility of the ceramic core, this pool has introduced ceramic composite technology (part of the aerospace industry for over 30 years) to the swimming pool industry. Add to that the incredible three dimensional effect of the Bi-luminite interior surface, and this is the pool of the future. Although it is limited with shape because it is also built in a factory, technology has allowed many variations to be made possible. This includes building pools on sloping sites, suspended on platforms, lap pools of any dimension, and even pools assembled on site to suit various sizes. Of course, once more the integrity and expertise of the installer is essential, but Compass Pools Australia has a rigorous compulsory on-going training programme to ensure its many variations on job sites runs smoothly.
So where do you go from here?
Certainly look carefully at all options, but whatever you do, take the time to talk to your local Compass Pools Australia Dealer. You will be pleasantly surprised to know that they have three different options with their pools, making it possible to satisfy what ever your budget level may be. Also, Don’t forget to ask Compass Pools Australia about the pool that cleans itself – now that is really spoiling yourself and living the easy life.
