If you fancy a day out in Kent, one great way of spending it is in your car driving from attraction to attraction. Kent has a lot to offer in terms of sights and many of these belong to National Trust.
You can start off at the gateway to Britain, the White Cliffs of Dover where you will find a visitors centre telling you about military and penal history. You can also visit the South Foreland Lighthouse nearby. You’ll reach this historic landmark by walking along the beautiful white cliffs. The lighthouse was the first to be powered by electricity and was the site of the first international radio transmission. The Lighthouse is a 2 mile walk away from the parking at the White Cliffs of Dover.
Moving on, take the A20 and the M20 and race up through the Kent countryside towards Maidstone where you will come across Stoneacre at Otham 3 miles south east of Maidstone. Stoneacre is a 15th century yeoman’s house with a garden, orchard and meadows to stroll around in.
From Stoneacre you can double back down south to Sissinghurst Gardens near Cranbrook, a beautiful manor house and gardens which was owned and cultivated by Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville-West in the 1930s. You get there from Stoneacre by taking the A274 to the A229 and then the A262. It’s only a 30 minutes pleasant car ride whatever vehicle you’re in.
You can then finish your journey at Scotney Castle another 20 minute drive away by following the A262 west. Scotney Castle gives you two magnificent houses, one being a ruin of a medieval castle with a moat, the other an Elizabethan style house built in 1837. There are also lovely extended gardens to stretch those tired legs in.
So regardless of whether your trip is undertaken using a small convertible or you’ve packed your family into a Citroen C4, Kent is the ideal region to spend a day on the roads in driving between National Trust treasures.
