It is challenging task to assure the water safety when the access of water for drinking continues to be a crucial issue in some parts of India. Pollution and over exploitation resulted in the problems related to usable quality of water. The pollution is in large due to the speedy pace of industrialization; augmented emphasis on growth in agriculture has been accounted mainly for deteriorating the quality of water, might it be the surface or the ground water. neven distribution of rainfall due to consistent shift in weather conditions and deforestation also results in the aggravation of this problem. Over all the quality of water in most parts of India has become a great concern from the consumption point of view at large.
In the determination of water quality, individual practices play a significant role. Both point and non-point sources of pollution affects the quality of water. Sewage discharge, urban run off, industrial discharges, excess or surplus from agricultural fields, etc are normally guided into water resources and thus results in poor quality water. At times, natural forces like floods and draughts also affects the quality of water. Even people’s general practices like ritual idol emersion, public bathing, cattle bathing and open air excretion adds to the consistently changing quality of open sources of water.
To maintain the water resource quality, it is also significant to ensure involvement of users in maintaining quality of water and making people aware about aspects like environmental sanitation, hygiene, safe storage and proper disposal of wastes. Besides government, private sector and Indian Water Industry must take some proper steps with firm policies and programs to bring about awareness among general public pertaining to water safety.
India water companies may adopt certain model villages and help the villagers in providing suitable physical infrastructure like tube wells, hand pumps, etc as part of their corporate social responsibility. As a safe water practice, India water business is gearing up to offer cost-effective and cutting-edge technology in products like water purifiers, etc to provide safe and clean drinking water to millions of users.
Government on the other hand should formulate strong policies and plans to ensure that every Indian citizen uses safe drinking water, either from deep-bore well or through proper processing and sanitation. Its highly appreciated fact that the National Water Policy guidelines has been laid by the Government of India in 1987 which serves its purpose for offering safe drinking water to millions of people across the country. For ensuring system sustainability and to institutionalize participation of community in the rural drinking water supply schemes implementation, numerous steps were being initiated. With the recently launched Public-Private-Partnership efforts, it is now very much likely that a safe level of awareness has been imparted on people and the role of India Water News in publicizing these initiatives cannot be overlooked.
Steps are being taken by government as well as many NGO’s to disseminate information regarding water quality and making them aware regarding the same. Health and hygiene are of prime importance and by educating people; there could be a paradigm shift in the perspective of people for this precious natural resource.
