Italy is considered by many people as one of the most beautiful locations in the world. It's the location of significant works of architecture, stunning visual art pieces, and some of the world's best cuisines. It's no surprise that tours in Italy are one of the most in-demand.
Proof of this demand is in the statistics: Italy is the fifth most visited country in the world. Not only that, but tourism in the country generated $39 billion in revenue in 2010, and saw nearly 45 million international visitors. This has to come as no surprise, given that the country truly is a must-see destination. For many, tours in Italy include things like a visit to four of the country's most commonly known cities: Rome, Venice, Florence, and Milan. Each city offers something different and something similar all at once.

Rome - This is one of the most well-known cities not only in Italy, but also all over the world. This exciting metropolis is modern and classic all at the same time. Everywhere you look, you can find remains of the past. From the many basilicas to the countless museums, each structure has its own story to tell.

Among the more popular attractions is The Colosseum. Built in 80AD, this landmark is the oldest available from Imperial Rome. The structure once was host to hardcore gladiator and animal fights. Today, thousands get in line each day just to get a quick look at the interior.

Rome is also where you can the Vatican. This city-state is well known as the center of Christianity, but more importantly, it also keeps some of the earth's greatest pieces of art. This includes St. Peter's Basilica, the seat of the Roman Catholic Church and an art piece in itself.

Venice - This northeastern city is perhaps best known for its canals and gondola rides. Lots of people go to the place just to experience the city's distinctive and unparalleled architecture. Built on a lagoon, the locale has a little over a hundred bodies of land linked by over 400 bridges. The Grand Canal is among Venice's most popular points of interest. It is filled with all kinds of boats, and is lined with wonderful buildings.

Florence - Just like the majority of Roman cities, Florence has a number of the world's most breathtaking architecture. Unfortunately, just like most modern Roman cities, the attractions are lined with many enthusiastic sightseers too. Visitors planning to avoid long lines and crowded areas should look into taking Florence day trips. Considering that the city is inside the Italian province of Tuscany, it is the ideal point of entry into the nation's countryside. Florence day trips may consist of wine tasting excursions in one of the many vineyards, or a trip to Boboli Garden, overlooking the metropolis.

Milan - Considered by many people to be the fashion capital of the world, the pace here is quicker than other Roman cities. The city proper is lined with numerous big ticket fashion stores. For people planning to shop till they drop, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II is a shopping haven. For people who'd want to experience more Italian culture, there are several attractions to visit such as the Duomo and La Scala.
