While it’s great that information can be shared almost instantly, it has also created a problem of storing and sending large file and bulk data. A few years ago, it was a big deal to find mediums that could allowed you to share 1 GB of data, but they’ve become the norm today. Even HD video recordings can be stored and shared. Here’s a review of the few free and paid services that allow you to transfer large files:
- DropBox: This is undoubtedly the most popular of all services. In fact, Apple CEO Steve Jobs even offered to buy it. The problem however is that the storage size of 2GB is very less for free members. Paid membership includes $10 for 50GB and $20 for 100 GB. Another problem with this is that you have to wait for an upload to finish before it can be shared with someone.
- Opera Unite: This system uses the HTTP Protocol to share large files over the Internet. All that you got to do is to install Opera Unite, configure them on your screen and then send the password and the URL to the recipient.
- File Dropper: This service allows you to share data upto 5 GB. You neither have to register or log in to share data. Instead simply use the URL (of the file that is uploaded) and the embed code and paste it as a download link. While 5GB is certainly more than the storage size offered by DropBox, it isn’t sufficient. Besides the free plan, there also exist the paid plans that range from $1 to $10 a month. You can store anywhere from 50GB to 250GB using these paid services.
- SendThisFile: This system does not have a limit to the file size that can be stored. They offer a free service with minimal restrictions and have a 15 day free trial period for all paid plans. The files hosted on the free service stay on the system for three days. Paid plans offer longer file retention and range in price from $5 to $595. While the $5 pack allows you to customize and brand your data, it doesn’t give you advanced security features including advanced admin level controls and isolated file storage. Data storage ranges from 500MB to 2000+GB. The restrictions on the free system can be disappointment, but then there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Their Enterprise plan has many features, a few include: unlimited users, customizable upload form that can be placed on your website or hosted at SendThisFile, 128 bit AES, and over 90 GB upload and download per month.
The free services distinguish themselves from the paid ones are the extra features like file encryption, FTP access, greater upload speed and better advertisement free service.
