Begin packing items you know you won’t need before you unpack your belongings in your new house. This includes decorative items, off-season clothing, your fine China and artwork. Pack up a room at a time and don’t move onto another room until you’ve finished the one you started.
For those of you who are moving, you probably have already taken care of the big necessities, such as hiring your movers, sorting your belongings and transferring records from your child’s old school to his or her new one. Chances are, you have also likely already begun to pack up the items in your home that you don’t use very often. These are usually the first steps everyone takes when moving; however, about a month before moving day arrives, many people begin to panic. If you panic, you could miss an important part of moving, which could make your experience miserable. This four-week schedule, though, can help you get through these last few weeks and get you into your new house as easily as possible.

4 to 6 weeks before moving day:

Begin packing items you know you won’t need before you unpack your belongings in your new house. This includes decorative items, off-season clothing, your fine China and artwork. Pack up a room at a time and don’t move onto another room until you’ve finished the one you started. This will keep you on track as you move through your house. Make sure your car is tuned up and ready to make the trek to your new neighborhood.

2 to 4 weeks before moving day:

Call the telephone company, utility company and cable or Internet provider to transfer your services to your new home. At this point, all you will be doing is giving them a cut-off date for your current home and an activation date for your new residence. Of course, some utilities will not transfer. In this case, contact the utility companies in your new area to set up your new account. You should also begin looking for a bank in your new area and begin the process of transferring your money.

2 weeks before moving day:

Verify any reservations you made for your own personal travel and that of your family. Plan what you are going to eat for the next two weeks that will use up the food you can’t bring with you. Get rid of all materials that are illegal to move, such as flammable and poisonous substances. Remember to do this properly. Let the post office know you are moving and send change-of-address-cards to friends, relatives and magazines.

1 week before moving day:

Keep a few boxes on hand to pack up any last minute items and finish packing all remaining belongings. For the items you are going to need during the move, pack your suitcases so they will be easily accessible throughout your travel. Refill all prescription medications that you will need over the next several weeks. Finally, begin cleaning the house and yard for the new residents.

On moving day:

Do not leave your old house until all items are loaded onto the movers truck. Sign any paperwork that is needed and confirm that the movers know where they are going. Walk through your house one final time, opening all cabinets and checking all rooms to make sure no items are left behind. Turn off all lights, the air conditioning or heater and if any appliances are staying behind, unplug them. All windows and doors should be closed and locked. Give your keys to the rental office or to a real estate agent to give to the new owners.
