I’m not saying that they don’t study hard, but obviously the material you absorb is what counts. The first thing that you have to understand is that they don’t care whether you know anything about the job. A lot of people assume since it is a police exam it is going to be about topics related to police work and things of that nature. That is a completely false assumption. You’ll learn about all that stuff when you get hired and go to the police academy. Until then they’re just looking for competent individuals that exhibit characteristics that make up good police officers. This is where all your studying should be going. Typically the exam will break down into a few different categories: math, reading comprehension, writing, memory and directionality.
Math is pretty straight forward. You’re not going to need anything special like trigonometry. You just need to show you have an aptitude for the basic things like addition, multiplication, fractions and percentages. You really don’t even have to study for a subject like this. All you have to do is brush up on things.
Reading comprehension and writing are both important. Comprehension comes down to how much you absorb when you read. The best thing you can do is start reading on a regular basis months before the exam because that will help. For writing, you have to use proper grammar and spelling.
Memory is something that they like to test out. They usually give you a picture and allow you to view it for a few minutes. After that they’ll take it away and ask you questions on things like license plate numbers and street names.
Lastly, directionality is your ability to determine where you are and what direction you’re traveling. They’ll have questions where you’re traveling north and taking turns. It’s really not that hard, you just have to pay attention to the questions.
